This is the thing that always gets me from so many modern politicians: they seem *desperate* to argue the only real work is working on an oil rig, farming or fishing. They crap all over the arts and universities, which are MASSIVE employers and industries in which the UK has long excelled.

Stardust. Get the DVD where the team talks you through the making of it. Look out for the really long single take, and where the stunt woman was tied to a pole so she and her long dress didn't blow over the cliff edge.

It’d be cool, when reporting on a blind visitor suing over lack of access to the Bayeaux Tapestry, the supposed journalist could make it clear that this isn’t at all a ridiculous request. In fact, it’s completely in line with Equality Act 2010. Museums have provided audio forever.

I get fan mail, which I think is awesome. Also, in the world we live in, which includes “AI”-generated scams and other phishing expeditions, it’s necessary to set some expectation…

🙄 Today an event organiser told me they "certainly don’t see AI as a replacement for the creativity and talent of people like yourself, quite the opposite". They use it because it's "practical and time-saving for a small business like ours". Not a replacement..? It's literally that. 🙄

Right? AI is a non-consent theft machine built on stolen labor of creators, whose work is fed in, and the global south workers, who train the models. To hear, it is also stealing the unpublished work of those that feed their work into their models isn't surprising. AI is a practice of ethics evasion

Stories like this have, for ages, treated men's desire to harm women as a sort of background noise, a weather we just normalize and accept and try to work around. Feminism is among other things a process of denormalization.

Monday Motivator: Painting a Memory Landscape
"When I need a break from whatever project I'm working on, I often like to paint small. And I like to paint from memory. "A small piece painted from memory doesn't ask for detail. It simply asks for shapes and contours and changes in value. "For me, as a landscape painter, it asks me to remember impressions, the way I felt in a place.

Serious question: Is there a name for when a passage (here a recipe) is copied wrongly from the original text, continues mutating then finds itself added to a new compilation alongside the original passage? What do you call such a redundant mutated extra? If there isn't a name I need to invent one.

It's like AI music. There's no gain in having AI "make us a song". There are endless songs that could yet be written. So what? The idea that the songwriter wants to get to a finished song as quickly as possible is so deeply mistaken.

What AI developers don't seem to get is that finding "the answers" here was never really the point. Mathematicians don't really want to know if a conjecture is true or false for its own sake. They love doing maths, for a host of reasons but in the end because they're human.

I wonder if this might be a turning point. I'd like to think so. Because this declaration speaks to so much about the problem with AI in such contexts. If it can be of help in, say, drug discovery, that's fine. But it's precisely because maths doesn't have those stakes that the message is powerful..

People want the culprit to be religious indoctrination because its a lot more comfortable to believe you are being attacked by religious fanatics. The true religion and God of our time, that surpasses all existing ones, is the worship of wealth, capital, and those who accumulate / hoard it the most.
