Some nice throwing on a rainy day. These gourd neck vases are maybe my favourite shape to throw, it’s a nice technical challenge 💕

Benefits that have devolved to Scotland's parliament have had some improvements, such as awards for lifelong disabilities not being reassessed every few years. But the belief that it's easy to get persists.

The reason the anti-abortion conservatives needed (and I mean NEEDED) to get rid of the "risk to life and health" exception to anti-abortion laws was that EVERY PREGNANCY risks life and health. Every. One.

I was there. When Peter Gelb stepped out in front of the curtain, my heart sank. I thought he was going to announce that one of the leads was ill and wouldn't be singing.
But no
He spoke in support of Ukraine in the wake of Trump's diesel deal with Putin, the disruptions in Starkink service and intelligence sharing, and the most recent Russian attacks that had killed so many Ukrainians the night before.
I have never been prouder of my favorite opera company.

Seriously cool rocks! There's honeycomb rock at Elgol on the Isle of Skye, Scotland. I don't have any decent photos of my own because I simply couldn't get myself close to a cliff that felt like it would crumble if I sneezed. www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4028239

If you've ever wondered whether a beloved Sailor fude-nib fountain pen would survive being left in a pocket in the washing machine, the answer is no. Cap came unscrewed; nib was curled back on itself. Tried a rescue with jewellery pliers, but it's a only producing a much wider line now. 😕

I found out today that only 2,000 people are getting Basic Income for the Arts. I thought it was 10,000. The pilot was successful, why wasn't it expanded? It costs the state €34m a year, and we just gave the greyhound and horse racing industry €102m in the last budget. FFS

And while we're on the subject: there's no ethical use of a product brought to market through unethical means. It doesn't matter whether the product is "AI" or chocolate or diamonds. Most generative "AI" was knowingly developed through massive theft from creatives; we have the emails admitting this.

The acid test for me is a simple one: Has my professional and/or creative life benefited in any material way from "AI," and very specifically generative "AI"? No, it hasn't. Has it been negatively impacted by the same? Yup, in a whole bunch of ways. My professional life is worse now for it.

Bullshit. Nothing that’s created through the means of theft of both creativity and human resources can ever be used ethically. There’s no such thing as “ethical AI use.”

That entire first sentence is an oxymoron. You cannot use generative AI in a way that "protects and supports" creators in ANY capacity because the entirety of genAI was trained on WORKS STOLEN FROM ARTISTS. You want to support artists? Ban the use of genAI in it's entirety, period full stop.

‘Protect the Dolls’ is a term meaning ‘take care of trans ppl’. Its origin is due to the campaign of persecution & violence aimed at this vulnerable part of the Gay community. LGBTQ ppl nationally, & internationally, have been flagging that UK state TV is actively transphobic, for years. More proof!

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead
