How (not) to Write about Health Equity-- an excellent satirical article published in @plosglobalpublichealth.org 🧪 An encapsulation of the feel-good, do-nothing approach to health equity; the lived experience paragraphs resonated most. Read the whole article here: journals.plos.org/globalpublic...
Praise “intersectoral and interdisciplinary collaboration” as the panacea. Everyone can collaborate: ministries, health professionals, researchers, civil society, philanthropic foundations, and commercial actors whose business models actively harm public health. Do not discuss conflicts of interest. Do not ask who has power in the room. Oppression disappears once everyone is brought to the table – provided no one asks who owns it, who paid for it, or who keeps poisoning the food.

Once the table is set, invite “lived experience” into the conversation. Invite structurally marginalised people to share their stories. Thank them for their courage. But do not let them decide what should change. Lived experience should move the room, not move resources or authority.

I was one of a number of patient scientists and advocates who was interviewed for this sympathetic, open access paper "Patient's knowledge, doctor's ignorance: The production of knowledge about myalgic encephalomyelitis" www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... #MEcfs #PwME #epatient #epatients #CFS
Abstract
It is usually assumed that patient and doctor know strictly different things: the patient knows the phenomenological aspects of their illness, and the doctor knows its medical aspects. I present a case study, that of myalgic encephalomyelitis, wherein, due to severely dysfunctional institutional knowledge production and transmission mechanisms, the medical aspects of the illness are on the whole better understood by sick people than by their doctors. Indeed, lay scientists within the patient community disseminate and produce science on their disease, ensuring that patients as a whole have reliable knowledge about their disease. By contrast, systemically produced and systemically maintained ignorance on the part of medical professionals is the norm, and may be beyond the specific case study I present.

An article screenshot from the European Medical Journal (EMJ) website, featuring a large purple logo at the top. The bold main headline reads, "COVID-19 Linked to Increased Risk of Six Allergic Conditions." Below the headline, the publication date is listed as 4 Oct 2026, categorized under a green "Allergy & Immunology" tag.
The main body of the image features a photograph of a woman with dark curly hair sitting indoors and blowing her nose into a white tissue. She is wearing a light blue denim jacket, looking down with her eyes closed, and appears to be suffering from allergy or cold symptoms. The background is a softly blurred room with muted curtains and a green houseplant.
