In 2025, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) caused a stir by suggesting that dark energy is evolving. Learn more about this claim, the history of DESI, and what comes next:
Is dark energy evolving? For nearly three decades, experts thought the accelerating expansion of the universe was driven by a constant, unchanging pressure. They call it dark energy. That changed in 2025. DESI published startling evidence that dark energy may not be constant after all.DESI suggests dark energy was stronger in the distant past than it is today. More data is needed to confirm the findings.

Are we close to discovering dark matter? New results from the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment show a single particle interaction that doesn’t match known background interactions from normal matter. The result is not statistically significant enough to count as a discovery – but it’s an exciting lead.
Have researchers discovered dark matter?New results from the LUX-ZEPLIN experiment, operated by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and an international team of scientists – are offering a tantalizing new clue. LUX-ZEPLIN uses ultrapure liquid xenon to hunt for dark matter. Its specialty is searching for WIMPS, or Weakly Interacting Massive Particles. Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs). These are a class of theoretical elementary particles that interact with gravity and the weak nuclear force. Researchers have been searching for them for decades.
