The Stnky Toe Fruit Tree (Hymenaea courbaril) got torn up in Hurricane Lowell. The cacao that has been growing in its shade for years is now getting a lot more sunshine. The red leafs are all new growth. (Yes, the fruit does smell like stinky toes.) #hurricanelowell #hawaii #stinkytoefruit

All these plants are fine. Minor damage to the greenhouse. My living room and storage shed were destroyed. Washer and dryer flew across the yard. Many of my mature trees were killed. No power, water pressure dropping. Winds were around 90mph. Everyone here is fine. #hurricanelowell #gardensky

Cacao want to spend their first 2 or 3 years in shade, which is about the productive life of a papaya. So when the cacao is ready, ill chop the papayas so the cacao can get full sun, and it will still have the Okinawa spinach as the long-term ground cover. (3/3)

Weeding in the #garden today. This guild started as a #watermelon patch intermixed with #OkinawaSpinach. The spinach takes a while to get established, so it pairs very well with a seasonal crop of watermelon and/or #squash. I was also throwing #papaya seeds that are now appox 5ft tall. (1/3)
