Active (black) and inactive (gray) USGS stream gaging sites in Nebraska. Based on an example in dataRetrieval R package document. To be clear, not a reflection of recent cuts. Most of the inactive sites were used in short-term studies, as long ago as the 1950s. But imagine if they were all active...

I’ve been thinking about how AI could be the end of curated software, open or closed. If folks are going to lean into “AI, can you make me an image editing package like Adobe?” or more simply, “AI, can you overlay these two images?” the quality of output will plummet or always be like 70ish percent.

Sicilian (Etna) basalt is also used in the building. The whole surface is coated with a wash that has oxidised the surface producing a skim of red ochre. I love this building and it’s the future! Build with stone! #urbangeology
View looking up the north side of the building which shows the minimal finish on the blocks. Some beams have been honed to a smooth surface, others still show the channels cut to house the explosives used to split block in the quarry. Half way up the building is a beam with minimal dressing. Another vertical perspective looking up the building.

The building is constructed from beams of larvikite, a monzonite from southern Norway which is more familiar as decorative cladding because of its iridescent feldspars. However it has a compressive strength 3x that of concrete. This is the 1st building to use larvikite structurally in 100 years
Close up of the larvikite. A coarse grained intrusive igneous rock composed of blocky perthite feldspars with interstitial magic phase. The surface is stained red with ochre. Some of the blocks show nice detailing with a design of scrolls and curlicues in very shallow relief

Until you passed out from lack of oxygen. :) What people say about ‘smelling the Moon’ is fine dust particles lifted off lunar rock samples after exposure to Earth air or in the case of Apollo astronauts whatever ‘air’ mix they had on the lander.

Dr. Fred J. Calef III @mapperwocky.bsky.social · 11h
The Moon Exosphere (if you want to call that ‘air’) is composed of hydrogen, argon, neon, some sodium, and other traces. All of those are odorless. Sodium can produce a smell like ozone if exposed to water. If you breathed pure ‘concentrated’ Moon ‘air’ it would probably smell like nothing.

While mountains give us high-altitude dark skies, they disrupt smooth airflow, forcing the air to break into turbulent pockets. This atmospheric jitter is called "seeing." NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory was intentionally built where coastal airflow passes smoothly over the ridge. 🔭🧪

The observatory is boot-shaped at lower left with long white service building extending left and silver dome sticking up. The dome's vertical slit is open, revealing the telescope in the blackness within. The night sky is peppered with the pinpricks of stars. The Little Beehive Cluster of stars is a denser collection of pinpricks to the upper right of the observatory.Illustration showing smooth ocean air flowing over a mountain, with turbulence forming on the mountain's opposite side.
