they are WHAT
“In Ireland, where toads are supposed to have been banned by St. Patrick, they are nonetheless known, along with poets, as warty boys. Once I was engaged to a poet who was walking before me” excerpt from elspeth barker’s notes from the henhouse

The reason that all this happened is because too many Americans thinks it’s cool and funny to be ignorant assholes. It’s not funny.

Prepare yourself for the greatest grave inscription you'll ever see.
A photo of a metal plaque on a gravestone in Shetland, which replicates the text carved into the stone but eroded by the elements. It reads:

DONALD ROBERTSON, born 14th January 1785. died 4th June 1843 aged 63 years

He was a peaceable, quiet man and to all appearance a sincere Christian.

His death was much regretted which was caused by the stupidity of Laurence Tulloch in Clothister (Sullom) who sold him nitre instead of Epsom salts by which he was killed in the space of 5 hours after taking a dose of it.

do you ever think about how part of why anime hit the US so hard at the end of the 90s was that the early audience was mostly people who grew up liking animation but outside a few movies a year mostly being served horrible zero-effort trash

‘It’s the best feeling’: how Copenhagen gave cyclists a green wave. “Traffic lights are synchronised so a rush-hour cyclist at 20km/h can catch green lights all the way.” If you want people to choose not to drive, make the non-driving trip better & easier for them. It’s as simple as that, really.

Take a minute to stare at this sunset painted by Vincent Van Gogh, it'll be good for you. Notice the single paintstrokes, and the ocher-golden light coming from the sun setting, and imagine being there for an instant. Vincent Van Gogh, Sunset at Montmajour – 1888
A van gogh painting depicting a sunset light coming from te right, with individual paintstrokes being ocra-dark yellow and golden over some leafy tall trees and bushes. The sky has a light mint shade with pastel paintstrokes all over, following the wind current.

The 20th Avenue NE bridge over Ravenna Park opened in 1913, but in 1975 the City of Seattle decided to convert it to pedestrian and bike only rather than spend money on a costly retrofit that would allow it to keep carrying cars. I think about that a lot.

Look, if you could just say that they are creating a computer program that will hack randomly into any computer, including military computers, people would easily understand the problem. Or you can keep ominously chanting "superintelligence" and people can just be paralyzed with idiosyncratic fears.

Probably. 18 USC §1030. Potential issue is that the statute has mens rea elements. I think there is a simple solution to mens rea issues as applied to AI. Anything that the AI does should be deemed to meet any level of knowledge, and that should then be imputed to whoever prompted the AI.

also Wikipedia didn't just happen and people adapted. it was sloppy in the 2001-2002 period and then a group of editors (including people who had been there right from day one also including myself) worked out principles for making the project work with a lot of hard graft over the next few years.

📌It's comical that with billionaires eating us alive, and paying off Republicans to batter our unions, keep wages as low as possible, and shitcan our benefits, we are "celebrating" Labor Day. We should be grieving for it.

America, where it is cheaper to buy politicians and policy than actually provide a decent service and build a sustainable, growing business not dependent upon fleecing monopoly victims:
Snip from link: None of that is a secret, but the dots were never connected quite so explicitly as when Frontier just assured investors, in writing, that it was making a lot of money from more than one million people who have no feasible alternatives, and that this justified "investing" political dollars to block cities from building networks, even where there is no cable internet deployment. Frontier's bankruptcy documents reveal that these political investments were always viewed as cheaper than the network investments they would otherwise have to make to keep its customers once they were no longer held hostage to its ailing, crumbling, overpriced network.

Picture the scene. It's 1769. You're William Aberdeen and you're drawing a map of Sebay in Tankerness, #Orkney. It's going well but then you realise there are some blank bits so you decide to add some decoration. You think about what to draw for a moment. It's an obvious choice.
