Nice to see VS candidate for Bass Chris Jobe getting a mention in Crikey for talking sense on potholes at a recent candidate forum on Phillip Island (article link below). No doubt there will be many such moments 'halfway between sincere amusement and genuine irritation' in this campaign!
Crikey article excerpt quoting socialist candidate Jobe linking a drop in road quality to privatised maintenance under Kennett; a crowd corrects "16 years" to 27, and Jobe says, "I'm saying it's privatisation's fault."

(CW for graphic discussion of execution) This was a good, though obviously upsetting, read. Especially this part by Corinna Barrett Lain, about why states fight to keep using lethal injection despite multiple high profile failures slate.com/news-and-pol...
Why are they sticking with this? My conclusion is lethal injection just does one thing well, only one. It hides the violence of state killing. With lethal injection, you don't have the blood of the firing squad. You don't have the sickly smell of burning flesh like you do with the electric chair, or people gasping with the gas mask, or with the gas chamber. With lethal injection, we get to tell ourselves that these people are just falling into a forever sleep.
I was thinking of this saying that | had read, "The heart stops reluctantly." And I was like, Oh, right, the heart stops reluctantly. Before a person is ready to die on their own, it takes physical force to stop the heart from beating. It takes violence to stop the heart from beating. And it could be a car accident or a homicide or an execution, but it takes violence. And what's special about lethal injection is it hides the violence.

Disability taxes continue to mount. From Nov 2nd, Melbourne Pathology will charge $30 for a home pathology visit for housebound & bedbound people. This was previously a free service, servicing some of the states most vulnerable chronically ill and disabled people. These costs add up 😔 #AusPol

This is rare: a mainstream journo - an ex-Murdoch one at that - acknowledging that "inequality and concentrated wealth" may be an issue for voters. Instead of the usual 'cost-of-living crisis' euphemism. If Shoebridge is having that impact already, it's a useful start to his leadership. #auspol
