This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

We cannot punish them all, and we therefore should not attempt to do so. Our goal should be to scapegoat a handful and force the rest to pretend they were always against it, until they almost believe they really were.

The ‘a nation is not just GDP!!!’ conversation is sort of stupid, to a first approximation every single good thing correlates with economic growth. ‘Do you prefer liquid or illiquid societal wealth’ gets more concisely at the actual division in priorities I think.

China's industrial growth isn't about "industrial policy" at all, it's a function of demographics. It has a 1.4 billion person common market and the ability to tap astonishingly varied labor pools (great engineers in the coastal cities, reliable cheap manual workers from the countryside).

The big lesson from Brazil's election results is that we operate under the illusion that once people experience actual authoritarianism, they'll be repulsed by it. In reality, Brazilian democracy is just 38 years old and many of the people who lived through dictatorship remember the era fondly.

Huh. Today in "always look up the etymology because sometimes you're just repeating a myth but sometimes it's weirder and more incredible than you could have possibly imagined" www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/c...
Screenshot of Merriam Webster etymology note for cockamamie:
By the look and sound of it, cockamamie (also spelled "cockamamy") could have something to do with a rooster and the outrageous sound it makes. But in fact, cockamamie is believed to be an altered form of the term decalcomania, which refers to the process, invented in the mid-19th century, of transferring pictures and designs from specially prepared paper to surfaces such as glass or porcelain. (The word referring to the picture or design itself, decal, is a shortening of decalcomania.) The word decalcomania comes from French, with décalcomanie combining the verb décalquer, meaning "to trace" or "to transfer by tracing," and -manie, meaning "-mania." Starting in the 1930s, painted strips of paper with images capable of being transferred to the skin were called decals or—in children's slang—cockamamies. Those familiar with today's temporary tattoos will understand quickly that these were regarded by many as silly novelties, lending the word cockamamie the necessary leeway for application to anything ridiculous.

What isn't surprising: work requirements are reducing coverage because of paperwork burdens What is surprising: apparently The Pitt had a storyline that demonstrated the difficulty of navigating Medicaid redeterminations
“Hopefully we’ll be back on Medicaid by then.”

“How’d you lose it?”

“They sent a redetermination letter to our old apartment. It didn’t get forwarded.”

“And you haven’t been able to get it back since?”

“I’ve been trying for months. To get re-enrolled, you need tax returns, pay stubs… I cut hair. My income fluctuates.”
