Imagine if we simply left murders by students on college campuses to be punished by colleges, using only the internal punishments they are able to inflict. We would find it insane and intolerable. Rape isn't that far off in terms of severity. Why are we putting utterly unsuited orgs in charge?

I think it's fine for unis to be in charge of managing petty public order / QoL violations on their campuses, but if there's one thing that keeps becoming more apparent, it's that local authorities with conflicting interests shouldn't run rape or murder cases. A statewide org should. No exceptions.

It is maximally profitable right now to either sell panic *about* trans people, or sell panic *to* trans people. Both impulses feed the media consumer's desire to feel mastery over events. One is simple bigoted conspiracism, the other is a defensive crouch that offers a false sense of security.
Emily: I think about this as a journalist and a novelist: I cannot control how the reader takes what I write. Especially when reporting, I try to be as careful as I can, but somebody might read what I write and conclude, Well, we're all going to die. And there's such an incentive structure to walk right up to the edge of catastrophe or even stick a toe over the line, and even publications I think are terrific will get as close to that line as they can because they know that drives subscription dollars and clicks. That's not just true of trans media; it's true of the media writ large. How do you think about that incentive structure, especially as it relates to social media?

Me: There's two ways to generate clicks about trans issues. One is to sell panic about trans people; the other is to sell panic to trans people. The social media incentive structure there, as it is with so many issues, is the septic, perverted version of that old classic about local TV news: If it bleeds, it leads.

Selling people that sense of control is, as I noted, the same thing at the root of a lot of conspiracism: not to trust mainstream sources who tell you things aren't quite so bad or things could get better or don't panic. It's the cinematic logic of a disaster movie where the people who are saying, "Actually, you should panic!" are correct. Think about everything from the narrative structure of Independence Day or Mass Effect. The catastrophizer is actually correct against all the people saying, "I'll calm down. It won't be so bad." That story structure is very, very popular, and it gets you invested in the protagonist with a pleasing sense of dramatic irony for the audience. They know something many of the other characters don't or refuse to accept.

We are all reared on some version of this story, and it seeps into everyday life. There's an excellent piece from CBS News in 1967 by Eric Sevareid reporting on the findings of the Warren Commission [whi

The gist of the Jack Smith hearing was that Republicans will fabricate evidence to entrap opponents and they were upset that Jack Smith had the audacity to investigate Republicans in Congress for possibly abetting Trump's 1/6 insurrection, in other words for doing his job.

I had a lot of fun with this thread yesterday and people seem to enjoy it. I am sad to have to report, that today they have reprogrammed the new federal chatbot to refuse to answer questions that might embarrass Trump. Eg: Yesterday Today
Is President Trump mentioned repeatedly in the Epstein case files?

Yes. Official materials say President Trump's name appears in the released Epstein-related files. A mention is not proof of a crime. Is President Trump mentioned repeatedly in the Epstein case files?

I only answer questions about U.S. government services and information, and I do not offer political commentary.
If you have a question about a federal program, benefit, agency, form, or how to complete a government task, ask that and I can help.

California law exempts ADUs under 750 square feet from ALL impact fees and requires impact fees on larger ADUs to be paid on a per square foot basis. Before SB 1117, a 751sf ADU had to pay all 751sf worth of impact fees. Now, the first 750sf are exempt and you only pay on the excess square footage.

To be very mildly spoiler-y: In the novel, there are TWO happily-ever-after student-faculty relationships. For the film, they wisely demoted one of the profs to be a postdoc (still concerning given his status) & just deleted the second romance. So yeah I think they knew it was problematic.

Several people are mad about this so I will briefly clarify! No, I’m not saying a novel is comparable to a real-life assault in any way. No, I’m not saying the author is bad or responsible for bad things. I am saying I’ve seen real bad stuff come from “consensual” student-faculty relationships.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.
