To do the math here you first have to fix a basic error: Bradford’s 2026 figure includes the rate budget (garbage, water, parking) but his 2011 figure does not. Real numbers: $9.4 billion in 2011; $16.6 billion in 2026. Now account for ~800K population growth and ~40% inflation.

"All of us have to learn how to invent our lives, make them up, imagine them. We need to be taught these skills; we need guides to show us how. Without them, our lives get made up for us by other people." Thinking about these words from Le Guin today in honor of those who imagined new ways for us. ♥️
Home, imagined, comes to be. It is real, realer than any other place, but you can’t get to it unless your people show you how to imagine it—whoever your people are. They may not be your relatives. They may never have spoken your language. They may have been dead for a thousand years. They may be nothing but words printed on paper, ghosts of voices, shadows of minds.

But they can guide you home. They are your human community.

All of us have to learn how to invent our lives, make them up, imagine them. We need to be taught these skills; we need guides to show us how. Without them, our lives get made up for us by other people.

Human beings have always joined in groups to imagine how best to live and help one another carry out the plan. The essential function of human community is to arrive at some agreement on what we need, what life ought to be, what we want our children to learn, and then to collaborate in learning and teaching so that we and they can go on the way we think is the right way [....]

In our time of huge populations exposed continuously to reproduced voices, images, and words used for commercial and political profit, there are too many people who want to and can invent us, own us, shape and control us through seductive and powerful media. It’s a lot to ask of a child to find a way through all that alone. Nobody can do anything very much, really, alone.

What a child needs, what we all need, is to find some other people who have imagined life along lines that make sense to us and allow some freedom, and listen to them. Not hear passively, but listen.

Some men just want to watch the world burn. Apparently, Canadians elected one to the country's top job. Mark Carney's approach to the climate issue is apocalyptic. As climate impacts reach hardcore crisis levels, he's determined to make things even worse. 🧵1/ climatefactchecks.org/millions-aff...
Canadian prime minister Mark Carney stands in front of four images.

In the top left corner behind him, we see the Toronto skyline through a thick haze of wildfire smoke. Overlaying text reads "Extreme wildfires are choking the continent as the climate crisis escalates"

In the top right behind Carney we see a map of Canadian wildfire locations and smoke plumes, with overlaying text which reads "Mark Carney cuts nearly half of all jobs at Canada's nerve centre for managing wildfires"

In the bottom left corner behind Carney we see a large oil pipeline snaking off into the distance, with overlaying text which reads "He plans to spend $40 Billion on a new climate-cooking oil pipeline"

In the bottom right corner, the background shows a dumpster on fire being carried away by floodwaters, with overlaying text which reads "But don't worry, he also supports carbon capture to reduce our oil industry's total emissions by 0.8%"

The figure is reading a book. He is red up to his forehead.

Panel 3

The red level has dropped to around his mouth

here's another throwback from 2016 a private poster commission inspired by Moby Dick honestly still really love this one, both the concept and execution i worked on pre-inked scratchboard for this one (so fully black) instead of the usual white claybord that i ink myself 30x40cm
a black and white scratchboard illustration inspired by Mody Dick. It depicts a giant white whale about to collide with a whaling ship. The scene is viewed from a bird's eye view, high above the scene. Seagulls are seen orbiting around the scene. The ship and the whale create waves in the water that reinforce the tension between them.
