Opposition to genocide is not hatred of a people, it is a principled stance against war crimes and a defence of human rights. The Carney government is escalating its support for Netanyahu's war crimes by criminalizing its own citizens' ethics. www.ijvcanada.org/tell-canada-...

Mark Carney wants to invoke positive public sentiments about the EU, but without offering Canadians the significant improvements to their quality of life that mentioning EU membership implies. He hopes to smear some feel-good EU branding on an agenda that degrades the things EU members enjoy.
Picture of Canadian prime minister Mark Carney with text:

The reason we're talking about a newly invented "associate member" status with the EU is in part because to become an actual member of the EU Canada would have to significantly improve our environmental protections, health care, and human rights protections while the Carney government is moving in the opposite direction of all of those things

When Australia let foreign capital take the kind of control over their airports that Carney is proposing in Canada, Brisbane airport raised its per-passenger fees by more than two thirds, and travellers were squeezed for more than $1.6 billion in extra fees. shrlnk.ca/s/zJo0ZyYu
A picture of airplanes at Sydney airport. Text over the image reads:

Australia "attracted international investment" by privatizing four airports. In the next decade, they charged air travellers $1.6 Billion in extra fees to push up their profits at public expense.

Our world could easily provide food, shelter, security & joy for billions for millennia to come. That possibility is being utterly destroyed so that a few sociopaths can temporarily enjoy hundred million dollar yachts. Their greatest weapon is deliberately manufactured mass public ignorance.
Everything happens for a reason.

Sometimes the reason is
that the universe is
indifferent to your
sense of personal importance
and the reality of your circumstance
doesn't care whether you choose
to believe in it or not.

Sometimes the reason is
that you are easily misled

Tariffs are a blunt force economic weapon, a self inflicted wound that hurts your own citizens first in order to inconvenience foreign suppliers second. Trump's tariffs hurt Americans. Mark Carney plans to emulate that bad policy by responding with counter tariffs that will hurt Canadians. 🧵1/
At the top of the graphic there's a quote from PM Mark Carney's press release about backing out of trade negotiations with the USA in black text on a white background. It reads:

At midnight tonight, the U.S. intends to impose a 50% tariff on roughly $28 billion of Canadian goods. Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to protect our workers and businesses.

Below that, there are two images side by side. It's actually the same image twice, depicting several business-attired people sitting around a boardroom-style conference table and talking.

The version on the left is labelled "Trump threatens tariffs." The conversation happening in that graphic goes as follows:

"Trump voters should have looked up how tariffs work before they voted for him."

"It's like bombing your own economy to hurt someone else's."

"American households are going to be so hammered by rising costs."

The version of the same image that appears on the right is labelled "Trump enacts tariffs." The conversation in this version goes like this:

"So Trump went through with it, and his tariffs are going to hit our economy hard. Ideas?"

"We should do the same thing he's doing and add a bunch more tariffs of our own!"

"Yeah, counter tariffs are such a great idea let's not even discuss any other options!"

At the bottom, below these images, white text on a red background reads:

Seriously? Canada's smarter than Trump. Can we please act like it? There are better ways to fight back than copying Trump's tactics.

For anyone wondering what taking a few days away from social media might look like, here's a picture of 190 jars of jam. Cat for scale. A lot of work, but infinitely more satisfying than paying attention to Carney supporters insulting me for wanting a climate that will let my garden keep producing.
A dining room table covered with newly filled jars of jam. A lynx point siamese cat stands on them, looking curiously towards the photographer.

We can never know in advance what parts of our garden are going to be most productive in any given year, but this year the berries have been particularly happy. Just one hascap bush provided 2.5 kilos, and the raspberries just keep on coming. Throw in some BC cherries & peaches on sale at our local coop because they clearly needed to get used right away for good measure and add several long days in the kitchen. Hascap, raspberry, rhubarb, raspberry rhubarb, cherry, raspberry cherry, spiced raspberry cherry strawberry hascap saskatoon, peach with a hint of cinnamon, peach with a hint of nutmeg. Smaller jars more convenient for mailing a selection to distant friends, larger jars for home use for years to come.

I expect several kilos more, mostly raspberries and saskatoons, but the rest will get used for something else. Our garden's a lot of work, but it pays us back so profoundly for all that work.

Next up, a ton of pickling.

That red line is what the most intense El Niño of any of our lives looks like so far. While our "leaders" rush to make this crisis even worse. I cant even.
A graph that displays sea surface temperatures from 1982 to 2026. It's hard to know exactly how to describe it to you, other than to say that the blue lines representing previous years jag up and down around the mean in the middle, and there's this terrifying red line that climbs way way up representing 2026 thus far, significantly higher than any of the others, and if you're sufficiently well versed in climate science to understand some of the implications it pretty much makes you need a new pair of underwear. It's goddamned terrifying. Seriously, there are a lot of things in this life that it's unremittingly awful to look upon, so it's kind of a blessing not to be able to see it if you can't. I'm not trying to be flip or anything, and please please please understand that I mean absolutely no disrespect in saying that, I'm just kind of saying that I sure as hell wish I couldn't see the damned thing. It's nightmarish, a looming cavalcade of catastrophes in graph form. Ugly thing. Chilling.
