a tremendous work of longform journalism
Team Der Viener Schlinger does its best to keep all fans’ retinas fully attached. Good said he never even saw “a bloody lip,” adding that the worst incident was that “one lady got hit in the face … Her husband threw the hot dog back at us.” “We try not to hurt anybody; That’s not the point,” Eliker told me, although he admits to unintentionally “knocking a beer out of a guy’s hand” last season.

A launched hot dog once hit Husker radio analyst Matt Davison in the chest while he was sitting in the press box, shattering the sunglasses hanging from his polo. “I’ve never been hit that hard in my life, even during my playing career,” he told me.

They have fired it at Ribfest, a GermanFest and the Nebraska Cattleman’s Ball. They fired it at one funeral.

Safety, or at least clothing safety, is also why Der Viener Schlinger frankfurters fly in their foil condiment-free. At first, they were accompanied by one ketchup and one mustard packet.

It worked fine until a hot dog left the tube and “just exploded,” Roode said. “All we saw was hot dog, bun, and Ziploc bag dust flying through the air.”

When the hot dog hit the man who caught it, condiments splattered “all over his real nice new Husker gear,” Good said.

The next Monday morning, Roode got a call at his office. It was the gentleman from western Nebraska, calling to complain that the condiments had stained his clothes. They were worth $175, and the Fairbury hot dog munitions overlords needed to replace them.

You may wonder how hot dogs headed to hungry Huskers prior to the Schlingerian Age. In addition to Memorial’s more milquetoast vendors, the idiosyncratic, tam-sporting P. Stephen Potter famously walked the sidelines and whizzed wieners into the stands using only the 50-odd muscles in his right arm. A Gothenburg lawyer during the workweek, for 36 years the ponytailed Potter was a gameday fixture, accurate to 40 rows up — farther than the first Der Viener Schlinger could hit. “He was a dead eye with those hot dogs,” Good said. “He threw it right to ’em.”

I feel like OpenAI could do a little bit better job acting like they give any amount of a shit whatsoever about the results they are publishing. They're just like, here, you piggies love this math shit right, here's a million pages of it. Should be mostly right.

Sometimes my wife and I like to send each other text messages as though they’re democratic fundraising messages, and I believe she has produced the jewel of the form.
, it's
and I
have some personal news to share with you.
Being a mom is one of the greatest joys of my life, and I feel deeply that we should have salad tonight
This year has been challenging in many ways, and I have immense gratitude for the kindness and support of family, community, and people like you who have continued to stand by me through everything. It means the world, and I wanted you to be among the first to know that squash is in the oven and kale is in the fridge. As many of you are aware, ve been navigating one of the most challenging periods of my day while waiting for dinner.
Facing baseless federal hunger brought on by not eating since lunch, fighting for the working kids of this country, and now caring for a mean toddler and helping him grow up in a world that isn't always easy. But it has also reminded me exactly why I do this work and who I do it for.
I will never stop working to eat dinner. I will never stop fighting for what is right, even when there is also some feta in the fridge. And I will never stop being so very thankful that you are by my side in this important work and that there is tahini in the pantry for dressing
With love and gratitude,
stop to end

Some pretty serious math/physics names here: openai.com/index/adviso... Feels like there's no great solution here? Like, having a single corporation in possession of 100+ important solutions that real people may be working on is not great. But neither necessarily is All of Math getting steamrolled.

For context, since AI was saturating a lot of math benchmarks, Epoch worked with mathematicians to create a private set of open problems, ranked as: Moderately Interesting, Solid Result, Major Advance, and Breakthrough. This was the first Major Advance result.

Had an experience recently talking to a mathematician friend about AI, and I asked why some math people are having existential crisis and some are excited. And he corrected me saying those things aren't mutually exclusive, and he himself often felt both at once.

back when Google used to be good, it would search web sites for text, and only return results that included the text you asked for. This meant you could search for two random words, and if a site was the only one that used those two words, you would get One Result. people called this a "Googlewhack"
