In Linear Programming we have two notational conventions, helpfully called the 'standard form' and the 'canonical form'. As you can see, this is confusing
two-column two-row table. left column: "standard form" with quotes, and minimize c transpose x subject to A x = b, x >= 0. right: "canonical form" with quotes, and maximize c transpose x subject to A x <= b, x >= 0

In 1986, UC Berkeley paid $15,000 annually for the linear programming software MPSX archive.org/details/CAT8...
Screenshot of text. "1. A mainframe computer with adequate disk tape, and cpu capacity, a large and well-supported linear programming package, and, it is hoped, a bargain rate schedule. At Berkeley we're blessed with a trouble-free, souped up IBM 3081 that has a good rate schedule. The only potential issue is the computer center's rising reluctance to pay the support cost of MPSX as campus overhead. Surprisingly, only a few people on campus are working with large scale linear programs, and the computer center may try to charge the $15,000 annual support cost against us few users."

In the 80s, the USDA had a mainframe computer and was solving linear programming problems for a frustratingly expensive $50-$500 a piece. 10.1287/opre.39.1.13
Screenshot of text. "Apart from these provblems, the principal frustration with FORPLAN lies with the cost and difficulty of solving some of the models created. A single run costs bewteen $50-$500, although some run costs exceed several thousand dollars. CPU times range between 4-100 minutes, although most runs take 30-65 minuts. These data are for the Functional Mathematical Programming System (FMPS) Sprint algorithm operating on a UNIVAC 1100/92 mainframe at the USDA's National Computer Center at Fort Collins"

ah yes, the Nobel prize winning algorithm. the gale shapley algorithm. the algorithm that produces the best result for the proactive party and the worst result to the people in the receiving end.
Hinge is built on the belief that anyone looking for love should be able to find it. It’s also built on an acclaimed Nobel-Prize-winning algorithm, so we can succeed in getting you out on promising dates, not keeping you on the app.There may be many stable matchings for the same system of preferences. This raises the question: which matching is returned by the Gale–Shapley algorithm? Is it the matching better for applicants, for employers, or an intermediate one? As it turns out, the Gale–Shapley algorithm in which employers make offers to applicants always yields the same stable matching (regardless of the order in which job offers are made), and its choice is the stable matching that is the best for all employers and worst for all applicants among all stable matchings.[11]

yu deng, the winner of the 2026 Fields Medal, the "nobel prize for mathematics", cites yuri manga in particular as helping ground and comfort him during his work
For comfort, Deng turned to manga. “I remember him at Courant. He was always holding a manga,” said Jalal Shatah (opens a new tab), a professor there who formerly chaired the math department. Deng particularly liked stories about deep friendship and romance and found himself drawn to a genre known as yuri, which focuses on those kinds of relationships between women — stories that “feel nice and warm and beautiful,” as he put it. They helped him be kinder to himself, “more comfortable with life.”
