The last breath of the aerosol-generating procedure? Scotland's new infection-control guidance and implications for anaesthesia   research-information.bris.ac.uk/en/publicati...
Abstract
In August 2026, Scotland fundamentally changed its infection control guidance regarding how respiratory disease transmission risk is managed - replacing the droplet–airborne dichotomy with the simpler concept of air transmission, and entirely removing the aerosol-generating procedure (AGP) list. This evidence-informed approach is based largely on the findings of clinical aerosol studies undertaken during COVID-19 which demonstrated that many procedures on the existing AGP lists, such as tracheal intubation, generate little or no respiratory aerosol (substantially less than talking or coughing). Removing the AGP list does not mean less protection; it means precautions are based on the likely pathogen, patient's respiratory activity, practitioner exposure and environment. Scotland’s revised guidance offers a timely opportunity to replace the inherited dogmas in international guidelines with rational and evidence-informed respiratory protection before the next respiratory disease pandemic.

Scientists and experts warned COVID could spread through airborne aerosols, but infection-control leaders relied on outdated views of aerosol transmission. The assumption that COVID couldn’t be airborne was a mistake, based on thinking already described as illogical in a 2006 SARS Commission report.
A screenshot of a CTV News online article headline reads, "'Outdated' health policies surrounding Covid still pose a danger today, says U of C researcher." The byline attributes the piece to Tommy Osborne, published September 18, 2026, at 6:23 p.m. EDT.
Below the headline is a photograph of a male researcher, identified in the caption as Dr. Mark Ungin. He is wearing a white lab coat and a white face mask while walking through a brightly lit laboratory room. The lab environment is crowded with scientific instruments, including a complex robotic testing assembly with a Formlabs 3D printer sitting on a foreground workbench, storage shelving filled with cardboard boxes, and various desktop laboratory tools stretching into the background.
The caption text underneath the photograph reads: "Dr. Mark Ungin is raising concerns surrounding health policy and Canada’s COVID response."

Reducing Long Covid to a few symptoms that fit certain illness narratives is harmful. Refusal to acknowledge damage to organs such as heart and lungs can foster a climate where people will be denied care, and might die as a consequence. Patients deserve better. We deserve to live

We must be crystal clear about a few points. Long Covid is not a "poorly understood neuroimmune disorder" with no biomarkers. It is a widely-studied biological medical condition. Pathology spanning basically all body systems is well documented, with damage in situ shown across organs

The hugely stupid belief that no symptoms = subclinical = no transmission, propagated by physicians who should know better, killed a lot of people. Murthy was asked to comment on the risk to the public of having masses of people gathering here from all over the world for FIFA World Cup games. 4/10

When physicians have faulty foundational beliefs (no symptoms = no disease being one of them), policy fails and people get sick. Because physicians protect each other, the status quo persists. That is what my Op-Ed was about (even if The Star watered it down against my objections). 8/10

We need to have more conversations about how to prevent physician expertise like this from causing mass harm. The most obvious move is to not let physicians be in charge. We need interdisciplinary leadership in public health. This requires calling out the harms of physician supremacy. 9/10

One of the biggest threats to public health is the "everyone's-going-to-panic" moral panic that public health leaders use to grab more power. If public health leaders get their act together, we will get hantavirus under control. But...the same was true for COVID. Instead, 25 million are dead. 🤷

This is the money paragraph for me.
What if we got away from the argument that doing cosmology and particle physics is practical or materially valuable? Then we have to accept that we're like the poets.
What we do is important culturally in the same way poetry is. A piece of this book is me saying there is value in banding with the poets, and fighting for the value of being curious and trying to articulate the world with whatever tools are available to us. Not for the purposes of selling something, but for the purpose of fulfilling our humanity.
