Remember that even though the vaccine is not sterilizing it does lessen the severity in the acute stage and also lessens the chances you get long covid symptoms and damage that can last for months, years, or even be permanent.

As of today, the CDC has changed (reverted) their Covid guidance to make the vaccine recommended for all people over 18. In addition to being a smart public health move, this recommendation also means insurance must cover it. Read more here: www.cdc.gov/covid/hcp/va... Listen to a breakdown here:

Just found out that there’s a new, and final, installment of ITV’s groundbreaking 7up documentary series. Original creator/director Michael Apted died a few yrs ago so they got Asif Kapadia (dir. of Senna) to do it. Can’t wait to watch & have an existential crisis.

The world has enough heavy news, here's some light stuff: Scientists have confirmed the existence of a species of wild cats previously only known to locals of Bolivia. It is *smaller* than a house cat and its closest living relative diverged 1.4 million years ago. It's called a Tilcayo.

satin ribbons

After unexpectedly winning her first blue ribbon for a sewn cape in 1981, Carol St. Clair Johnson developed an enduring love for the New Mexico State Fair. The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. The quilt earned Johnson yet another ribbon: Best in Category (miscellaneous quilt) at the 2023 New Mexico State Fair.

The good news is that Patagonia itself is still an iconic destination for birders, and I got to see a ton of local specialties, including Violet-crowned Hummingbirds. There are some great little restaurants and parks. No need to stop at that haunted-looking picnic table.

End of an era. One of the most iconic locations for US birders is a small picnic table in Patagonia, Arizona, the namesake for one of my favorite birding terms, the Patagonia Picnic Table Effect (see this excerpt from my birding dictionary). I went there last week and found the table had collapsed.
Patagonia Picnic Table Effect
/ˌpa-tə-ˈgō-nyə ˈpik-(ˌ)nik ˈtā-bəl i-ˈfekt/ noun: A phenomenon that occurs when someone spots a rare bird and birders flock to the area, leading
to more sightings of rare species there. It is named after a picnic table at a rest stop south of Patagonia, Arizona. Researchers have failed to find empirical support for the effect. Nobody is in doubt, however, that the effect has led to greater awareness of Patagonia, Arizona.A fallen-down picnic table at a rest stop in AZ next to some lush green trees and a grassy green lawn.

Bee-eater of the Day: Southern Carmine Bee-eater 📷 Luke Seitz
Bird perched on thorny branch, photo, description from ebird: ‘Large and gorgeous bee-eater with a mostly carmine body, and blue-green head and belly. The central tail feathers are elongated. In flight, reveals a blue-green rump, and rosy underwings with black trailing edge. Found in a variety of savanna habitats. Usually in flocks, and breeds colonially in riverbanks. Often perches on the backs of mammals and large birds, catching the insects that they disturb. The call is low-pitched and raspy, less musical than most bee-eaters. Similar to Southern Carmine Bee-eater, but there is virtually no overlap in range, and easily separated by the blue-green rather than carmine throat.’

"meeting people where they are" means you have to accept that they sincerely believe what they believe. It does NOT mean that you have to pretend to agree with their beliefs. In fact, you must be honest when you don't. Grown ups have to deal with people who don't agree with them all of the time.
