Senator Kennedy of Louisiana holding a poster with images of Fani Willis, Jack Smith, and I think Nathan Wade, plus images of texts, above the head of Senator Schmitt of Missouri. They both look outraged and confident. Senator Schmitt is about to accuse Jack Smith of attending a Hawks game. Kennedy received a Juris Doctor degree in 1977 from the University of Virginia School of Law. There, he was an executive editor of the Virginia Law Review and elected to the Order of the Coif.[6] In 1979, he earned a Bachelor of Civil Law, an advanced degree, with first class honours from Oxford University, where he was a member of Magdalen College and studied under Rupert Cross and J. H. C. Morris.[7][8][9]

[SENATOR SCHMITT]: So you’re telling me under oath that you’ve never been to a Bulls game? [JACK SMITH]: No, I don’t think— [SCHMITT]: WELL THEN *unveils poster* please explain this picture of you with Michael Jordan! [SMITH]: That is a Michael B. Jordan cutout from when I went to see SINNERS.

That too. They would buy a tape of George Strait, “50 Greatest Hits” or whatever, and that would sit in their car. And that plus the radio was their listening diet. And now there is a whole generation of country listeners, particularly a Morgan Wallen fan, who streams the bejesus out of that music. And we finally have data on what country fans are playing.

And streaming, by the way, does this to all sorts of types of music and genres. Whether it’s Christmas music, kiddie music — we had a number one hit about four years ago from the movie “Encanto,” “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

“We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

Rap diss records — you can’t really picture “Not Like Us” by Kendrick going to number one without streaming music, without tracking what people are actually playing, not just buying. So it has really, dare I say, democratized the charts to an extent that I don’t think we even could have fully comprehended when they added streaming to the charts.

Immigrants are now being scheduled for massive master calendar hearings — or "mega masters" — that include 100 or more people at a time. That's up from two or three dozen people at a time, which had been typical before for a first hearing. For many immigrants, this is their first appearance in court to try to make their case to be able to stay in the U.S.

Corporate abandonment of environmental pledges and right-wing environmental deregulation are hardly remarkable, but that is precisely why the turn to private power will not solve our current energy crisis. Positing “bring-your-own power” as a solution to the problem of insufficient power to meet demand concedes the notion that electricity is not a shared resource but one that goes to highest bidder. “Bring your own power” thus risks facilitating a privatization of the grid akin to the tech sector’s attack on hotels and taxis through AirBnB and Uber: hyperscalers can leverage their access to astronomical amounts of capital to build a parallel set of resources and then force governments to accommodate it. This structural similarity is not a coincidence—hotels, taxis, and utilities all fall within the category of businesses that LPE scholars have termed “networks, platforms, and utilities,” businesses recognized for hundreds of years as “affected by the public interest.” And electric utility regulation drew extensively and explicitly from the regulation of common carriers.

The lack of a penny policy in the US is leading to madness. Something was $8.01, and the cashier probably would have let me have it for eight, but I gave them $8.25 and, after some flummox, they gave me back a nickel. Yesterday a cashier counted out change and then didn't hand it to me at all. Chaos

Jasmine Cephas Jones manages to hold Lanterns S1E3 together, giving shading and continuity to what I felt was an underwritten part, *and* she somehow manages to be in dialogue with Aaron Pierre even though they only share one scene. For this reason the closing song should have been When Doves Cry

I get why they had to go with Gasoline Dreams to close out the episode, but clearly it should have been When Doves Cry

I believe this is the part of Dolly people don’t focus on enough. This is a woman who created a several-hundred-million-dollar media empire mining stories of her past. She used humor and charm to control every interview. If a male talk-show host made a joke about her figure, she’d make an even better joke about it. She was always two steps ahead of you. She never allowed herself to be a part of a story of which she was not the author.

Is there any way to interpret this other than "Oren Cass isn't an economist but calls himself one (at the think tank he founded)"? www.semafor.com/article/08/2...
Correction: Due to an editing error, an earlier version of this story was imprecise on Oren Cass’ academic background. He is a lawyer who serves as the American Compass’ chief economist.
