The assertion that "powerful cultural institutions" and the Democratic Party "treated more tradition-minded Americans as evil or backward" has become such a cliche in the punditry that people who say this feel no need to offer examples (or a single example) and journalists rarely ask them to do so.
Slade: I’ll be honest with you: Broad swaths of the American electorate, including members of some demographics that were once solid Democratic constituencies, came to feel extraordinarily resentful that both the Democratic Party and a lot of powerful cultural institutions (higher education, the mainstream media) were going all in on a sort of militant identity politics that treated more tradition-minded Americans as evil or backward.

This created a real siege mentality, where people were inclined to throw their lot in with someone whom they perceived as on their side and who said he would fight the forces that were hostile to them.

Its telling that when Trump's allies ask for patriotic sacrifice, it's always asking working folks to pay more at the pump, more at the grocery store, more for health insurance, and never to ask their millionaire donors to pay more in taxes to pay for the pointless war Trump started (and is losing)

This is Nazi rhetoric, full stop. It's not only a call to instigate a race war in the United States, but it's reminiscent of historic European justifications used to incite pogroms against Jews. People who say things like this are incredibly dangerous, as there is nothing they won't eventually do.

This afternoon in Marble Hill, a New Yorker was shot by an ICE agent in a residential neighborhood. Early reports indicate agents surrounded him and a 5-year-old child in his car before firing multiple rounds. We believe the child was physically unharmed.

This is an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city. I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities.

Our thoughts are with the injured New Yorker and his family tonight. We are praying for his recovery.

Get ICE out of our neighborhoods. Get ICE out of our hospitals. Get ICE off our streets. Get ICE away from our children.

Abolish ICE.

But you can't just brush by the data without explaining it. The spectacle of a major political party suddenly rejecting ALL its own ostensible, platform values - trading out Reagan three-legged stool for a Trumpian dark triad. Doesn't that say something? 'That the Democrats were mean.' No.

I must have missed Trump justification of DOGE as an effort to "protect individual liberty."
And while there are moments when he has claimed to be concerned with protecting individual liberty (by trying to reduce the size and scope of government through the Department of Government Efficiency, for example),

Fusionism was undoubtedly a significant force in the growth of modern conservatism, but the reliance on "3-legged stool" (free markets, virtue, anticommunism) framing can lead to the underplaying the role of opposition to the Civil Rights Act and other civil rights laws played in this growth.
