While I’m making people mad by claiming consumers get what they want, a lot of consumers really do like big houses with no lot lines in the exurbs. Good urban form exists in lower quantities than demand for it but I think exurban housing has a very high demand and that’s why there’s so much of it.

A lot of people like sprawl. While we should not subsidize it like we do today, I believe that people should be allowed to have what they want and are willing to pay for. (Most people won’t be willing to pay the actual cost of insuring a house in the woods in the time of climate change wildfires.)

Another entry for the "impact fee nexus studies are bullshit" file! Student enrollment at LA Unified has fallen for 24 years straight, ~48%. And yet! We have an impact fee because: "As new development occurs, additional school facilities will be needed to house the growth in the student population."
A screenshot from the Los Angeles Unified School District 2026 School Impact Fee Justification Study. The text reads: "Education Code Section 17620 allows school districts to assess fees on new residential and
commercial construction within their respective boundaries. These fees can be collected without
special city or county approval, to fund the construction of school facilities necessitated by the
impact of residential and commercial development activity. In addition, these fees can also be used
to fund the reconstruction of school facilities to accommodate students generated from new
development projects. Fees are collected immediately prior to the time of the issuance of a building
permit by the City or the County.
As new development occurs, additional school facilities will be needed to house the growth in the
student population. Because of the high cost associated with constructing school facilities and the
District’s limited budget, outside funding sources are required for future school construction. State
and local funding sources for the construction and/or reconstruction of school facilities are limited."

Noem demanded personal control over all DHS contracts over $100K and should be held responsible for the waste and (likely) graft that followed, which conservatively ran into the hundreds of millions. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/governing-...
From what we know of Kristi Noem, the head of DHS at the time, she was focused on micromanaging some aspects of government operations. Not workforce planning, but — you guessed it — the flow of grants and contracts. Any contract worth more than $100,000 had to be personally signed by her. And some of that spending was pretty questionable, such as a $200 million ad campaign prominently featuring Noem. There was no competitive bidding process and Noem directed money to Republican firms with long-term personal and professional ties to her. (The fact that Noem had previously led a “Meth: We’re On It” campaign did not seem to stop anyone from questioning her public relations skills).

DHS also bought 11 empty warehouses that it said would serve as detention centers, overpaid for them, and has since sold seven of them. Apparently Noem told officials to buy the warehouses within 30 days, leading to a rushed acquisition process. After the DHS spent nearly $500 million via no-bid contracts on 10 jets, officially for deportations, the planes are mostly unused, or reserved to ferry Trump officials around. So more likely to be incompetence than corruption in this case.

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

California law exempts ADUs under 750 square feet from ALL impact fees and requires impact fees on larger ADUs to be paid on a per square foot basis. Before SB 1117, a 751sf ADU had to pay all 751sf worth of impact fees. Now, the first 750sf are exempt and you only pay on the excess square footage.
