Look how pretty the sprayed edges on Jaclyn Moriarty's Time Travel for Beginners are.

If nothing else AI is making clear that there are people all around us for whom writing, art, and music are not communion with another mind, but just - wallpaper. Just pleasant things to look at. They think AI is conscious because they have no actual grasp of what it is to encounter another mind.

In many ways, the only thing boys need to learn are the lessons we already teach girls. They need to learn to be part of a community. And if they understand that, then the lessons on consent and sexual violence come naturally.

I hate how every time this is discussed, one of the underlying outcomes society/the economy apparently wants is for women to work more paid hours. I reject that. Everyone should work less paid hours.

The answer not explored here, because it's inconvenient for a capitalist society, is having a Universal Basic Income. Parents could reduce hours to focus on their kids and themselves without worrying about affording modern life.

I am already That Parent at the 9yo's school, so I guess they wouldn't be surprised if I rocked up with a printout about the evils of AI and plastered it over the top of every AI-generated poster on the school's walls. Even the poster for the freaking lunchtime Art Club was made by AI. ART CLUB.

Spinning mill blueprint could provide path to manufacturing revival
Companies can use a blueprint created by the country's chief science agency about how to re-establish spinning mills, a vital link missing in Australia's clothing supply, but the fashion industry says it will need significant investment.

Just declared a very loud, 'Get fucked!' to this mother, quoted in the SMH article about gender quotas being introduced for NSW selective high schools and opportunity classes. I love the journo's fact-based dig at the quote that ends the article.
Screenshot of a newspaper article that says, 'She did not let him know about gender quotas. "These kids are so little, there's already so much pressure. There's no need to add more, saying you're a boy, you're at a disadvantage," she said.
For the 2027 intake, there were 2076 first-round offers made to girls and 2188 to boys.'

39 years ago, in hardback, my first novel was priced at £9.99 (£36 in today's money). My new one will be £20 if you pay full price. Books have become such a ridiculous bargain, really. (Thought prompted by visiting the booking site for a West End play where the few remaining tickets are £215 each.)

I know this is probably old advice for most editors, but I really cannot recommend enough keeping a document of praise you receive from authors about your edits - it comes in handy when you have a crisis of confidence. Think of it as a list of cover blurbs for your career.
