Getting a little nervous watching the AOC/MAHA backlash swing into "we must always trust the medical system" territory. Especially coming from folks who have never had to ask the medical system to give a shit about their ovaries being covered in cysts or endo scarring eating their intestines.

As I'm updating our color naming data website, it's really clear that English speakers really don't agree on what the color term "puce" means. (Note: This is data where people were shown color tiles and were asked to name the color) idl.uw.edu/color-naming...
Color information for the term "puce." The average full color is grayish brown, and the average hue color is orange. The samples of the color range between purple, gray, and green.

What does power-shifting mean? This lays it out. A key insight is that progressives need to use policies to build enduring interests who will not just support those policies but also a fairer multi-racial democracy.
If we are fortunate enough to have a future rebuilding moment with a pro-democracy administration, we cannot make the same mistakes again. Rebuilders need to think about their work through the lens of power-shifting. They need to consider how they can design policy structures that build durable people power and deconstruct the power of the organized interests opposed to a multiracial, egalitarian democracy. We see this effort as being consistent with, and adding to, other important ongoing efforts to learn from the Biden-Harris Administration's record and assess what a future administration needs to do differently.

Very excited for this new essay at "Can We Still Govern?": The key claim is that planning for a progressive future cannot just focus on new policies. It also has to include - to start with - political power. What does a power-shifting perspective look like? 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/rebuilding...

Today we celebrate the PDFing of "Declaration FINAL v3 USE THIS ONE - SIGNED.docx" (Jefferson's draft was heavily edited by the Committee, then again by Congress, and he was big mad about it.)
📂 Version 1.0 — June 20, 1776
File Name: Declaration_Draft_TJ_DO_NOT_EDIT.docx
Author: t_jefferson_33

Comment from t_jefferson_33: "Certified banger."
📂 Version 1.1 — June 24, 1776
File Name: Declaration_Draft_TJ_comments_JA_BF.docx
Editors: b_franklin_GrittyOG and JA_redsoxfan (obo Committee, w/ Sherman and Livingston)
Commit Message: "First pass by the Committee of Five. Modest style changes."
Tracked Changes & Notes:
47 revisions (redlined), three full new paragraphs
Deleted: "sacred & undeniable" * Inserted: "self-evident"
Comment from b_franklin_GrittyOG: "250 years from now, people will think you wrote that banger. You’re welcome."

❌ DELETION: Large sections complaining about the ordinary British public being "deaf to the voice of justice."
Comment from NY_delegation_hub: "Guys, let's keep the finger pointed strictly at King George. If we trash the British citizens, we ruin any chance of future trade partnerships or alliances. Keep it professional."
➕ INSERTION: Added "appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world" and "with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence" to the closing paragraph.

System Notification: User t_jefferson_33 has left the chat.
The draft of the Declaration was revised first by Adams and Franklin, and then by the full committee. A total of 47 alterations, including the insertion of three complete paragraphs, were made to the text before it was presented to Congress on June 28. After voting for independence on July 2, Congress continued to refine the document, making 39 additional revisions to the committee draft before its final adoption on the morning of July 4.

The draft shows the multiplicity of corrections, additions and deletions that were made at each step. Although most of the alterations are in Jefferson's handwriting (Jefferson later indicated which changes he believed were made by Adams and Franklin), he felt slighted by the way Congress rewrote the manuscript. In a consoling letter of July 21, 1776, the state's senior delegate, Richard Henry Lee, wrote to Jefferson that he wished that "the manuscript had not been mangled as it is." In an 1823 letter to Madison, Jefferson wrote that, at the time, "during the debate, I was sitting by Dr. Franklin and he observed that I was writhing a little under the acrimonious criticisms" of Congress. In fact, as Congress neared completion of the document by altering nearly all of his last paragraph, Jefferson could only write in the margin "a different phraseology inserted." Jefferson remained bitter about the changes made to the Declaration of Independence right up to his death. His autobiography was a major effort to set the record straight on its writing.

I've spent a LOT of time fixing .bib in LaTeX by hand. The most common issue is that BibTeX pulled from something like Google Scholar has missing information. The most common missing thing is author first names... and requests for fixes from an LLM *consistently* makes them up.

And also LaTeX... this is a failure mode of LLMs that could catch even researchers who would never dream of asking an LLM to write their paper. :-\ Could just be getting help fixing a formatting error or completing a bibliography entry. I'd heard about this happening so I tested it myself.

Therefore, the possible failure mode here isn't just fabricated citations - a model can include a real paper in a real journal by a real author, but be *completely* wrong about what it says. The citation exists. But there's no actual relationship between the claim and the source.

Particularly in the context of (appropriate) crackdowns on LLM-generated papers (e.g., on arXiv) and more and more tales of fabricated citations, two reminders: (1) LLMs do not "cite their sources" (2) Using an LLM to generate, complete, or fix LaTeX code can result in fabricated citations
