Naruto’s words shatter their comfortable silence. Almost twenty minutes of blissful quiet, with nothing between them but sweat and the air of a mild summer night, and nothing around but the chiiiiiiirps of cave crickets and moonlight bleeding in from the slats of the office blinds.

Sasuke lifts an eye from the crook of Naruto’s arm.

“Another what.”

Years ago, the irritation in Sasuke’s little snarls would have made Naruto’s hair stand on end. Now he’s used to it. Now he knows when he can get away with pillow talk and when to stay fully shutted the fuck up. Just one of many lessons that came from age, experience, and some of Jiraiya’s more romantic works.

Naruto shifts on the couch so Sasuke can roll on to his back. It’s really far too small for the two of them, but he hasn’t yet thought of a way to sneak an “office bed” into the yearly budget without sparking questions he doesn’t know how to answer. Questions like “but why though?” and “so now my dad’s gonna sleep at the office too?”

So they’re stuck with it. Thank god it’s a sturdy old thing.

“Another kid,” Naruto says plainly. “Y’know, giving Sarada a little brother or sister.”

Sasuke scoffs. “What makes you think that?”

“I don’t think that, that’s why I asked.” Naruto can feel he’s opened a can of worms, but he’s not about to put the lid back on it either.
