“Why don’t you ride in the cycle lane?” This is hardly a one-off from my experience and there are certain sections of cycle path I’ll avoid because of this.
Broken glass bottles all over the cycle lane.

The new bike-friendly path into Cox’s Bay Reserve from Nottingham is open for business! Wheeeee! Hooray to the Waitematā Local Board and @lordonabike.bsky.social for accomplishing this handy little lowkey hyperloop. A nifty greenway glow-up, it makes local trips more easily bikeable and walkable.💚
Looking across from Kingsley St, to the new downhill path that creates a handy connection for walking and biking between Cox’s Bay Reserve and Nottingham St. Closer up, green sharrows alerting car park users to the presence of people on bicycles. You can see the playground in the background - formerly, people coming downhill into the reserve had to cut through the playground (which has gates), so it wasn’t really ideal for anyone.Looking front-on, a nice wide curved path with fences to stop over enthusiastic and/or new little riders from tipping off as they swoop down. Looking down from the top: a person walking down the original (narrow) path towards the playground helps illustrate the value of the new wider switchback path that delivers people into the carpark and onwards through the reserve and local streets. Woohoo!

I'm no civil (?) engineer but why would you place a massive trafffic light pole RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of the line where people on wheels will be going? This is brand new!
A handdrawn line showing where bicycles and scooters would naturally use but it is blocked by a massive traffic light poleAn oncoming cyclist negotiating the tiny space in between the traffic light pole and the road to get onto the shared path

Went to two Chemist Warehouses and both sold out of the 4-in-1 RATs. I guess it’s a good sign that some people are testing at least. Found some tests at the pharmacy inside Woolworths
An empty retail shelf where 4-in-1 rapid antigen tests should be. The only thing stocked are the 5-pack Covid RATs, priced at $16.99 each

To unbury the lede: Why is Auckland Transport quietly removing protected bike lanes on Mt Eden Rd (a major strategic cycle route!), and claiming it's an "upgrade" to make people on bikes share the footpath with pedestrians? Smoothing the way for buses? Fine. At cost to vulnerable road users? Nope.

People do not buy ebikes because they are happy to spend thousands more than they would on a regular bike. People buy ebikes because they save thousands compared to the car journeys they replace. That is the key distinction that many policy makers the general public miss or don’t understand.

Just returned from a first summer visit to the city and I was not prepared (for the wonderful streets I’ve heard so much about). Particularly appreciated the multiple public misting stations.
Tall circular green pole emitting mist on a pedestrianized street. Concentric blue circles and frogs are painted on the street. People sitting on wooden structures by small landscaped gardens on a pedestrianized street. Colourful boat and boathouse play studies on a pedestrianized street. Waves, fish, and jellyfish are painted on the street. A parkette off a pedestrianized street with misting structures in the centre.

Does your local fancy restaurant look like this? If not, it’s probably because: 1) zoning created large distances between housing & restaurants. 2) the streets between housing & restaurants are unsafe for biking. 3) there isn’t any/enough bike parking 1/2

Don’t forget what REALLY “drives” a lot of regional growth and infrastructure politics. It’s pretty much this. Great drawing via Ian Lockwood.
Cartoon by Ian Lockwood. A man in a vehicle with the words “regional travel demand” on it is talking to a man and his daughter on the sidewalk named “City.” He says “Hey City! I choose to exercise my freedom and reside out in the suburbs. Now, I want to drive fast through here without delay. So, I demand that public taxes be spent to widen your roads and lower your safety, health and quality of life. Fair deal? Want to shake on it, pal?“
