One of the strong arguments in support of dense, frequent transit is child and parent mobility autonomy once kids are mature enough. Parents who have figured this out in San Francisco are some of the biggest proponents of Muni. Suddenly everyone is happier and has more time!

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

The manufactured moral panic about “biological men playing women’s sports” is a collective mass hysteria. This is an infinitesimal issue, completely undeserving of a robust debate. It’s essentially in-person voter fraud: A thing we are told to care about that doesn’t happen.

12. Here's the key insight though: as labor-augmenting technologies LLMs make researchers more productive and therefore they *raise the opportunity cost of researcher time*. As a result researchers will have incentives to invest less time in polishing a current project before moving on to a new one.

This is very “when the worst person you know makes a good point” — I think that FIFA is a morally bankrupt organization and the demand for public transit to World Cup matches is entirely self-serving, but it is pretty cool to see car-centric US cities get to look around and try out new approaches.

A thread of my own favorite mountains, to go along with these. Also starting with my all-time favorites. Nothing has quite the same place in my heart as the White Mountains.
The southern Presidentials: Mt. Eisenhower (middle) and Mt. Washington (back).

Eisenhower is rounded and covered in green trees, while Washington is grey and rocky. The sky is blue with perfectly fluffy white clouds.Mt. Washington in early light.

The sunrise is just out of frame to the right, leaving the visible side of the mountain cloaked in shadow. The outline of the buildings on the summit is stark against the perfectly blue sky.Franconia Ridge, viewed from North Kinsman.

A long ridgeline across a deep green valley, with rocky landslide scars cutting down. The sky is overcast, but there are still so many colors of green. It's not always clear, but it's still beautiful. On the Mt. Washington summit, locked inside the fog.

Rocky ground disappears into the grey fog. The ground is a random jumble of rocks, except for two cairns (rock piles) marking the trail as it fades into the distance.

Universal Basic Income and Mental Health: What the Evidence Actually Suggests
Universal Basic Income is usually debated in economic terms, but its most consistent effects show up elsewhere—in mental health, stress reduction, and community stability. When people are no longer one problem away from falling apart, anxiety eases, crises decline, and quality of life improves in measurable ways.

I know Calvin’s dad is already having a moment, but every terrible “outsource precious and fleeting moments with your children to tech so that you can spend more time on your work” pitch makes me think of that one strip I never really cared about as a kid, but care a lot about as an adult.
The Calvin and Hobbes strip where Calvin asks his dad to come play in the snow with him. His dad initially says no, because he has to work. Then, angry at himself, his Dad goes out to build a snowman with Calvin. As the Dad works into the night to make up for it, we see Calvin’s mum lifting him up to give one of the few, if only, kisses he ever gives his dad in the Calvin and Hobbes run. His dad is content. It’s a textless comic, and it’s lovely.
