the goalposts for being an effective or "efficient" person just change with tech advances so there's nothing AI is going to be able to do that is going to be like: wow, now that the robot does my tasks i have infinite time to sit by the pool

I had another thought about this in the middle of the night which is that there are workers at TSA coming up on 20+ years of service. And they’re aging (obvi). So this is a neat trick for gutting ranks of higher earning, high seniority workers.

The Chair Fight is common in retail and comes down to control. My first thought that it’s particularly discriminatory to pregnant women. The second is the extremely fuzzy definition of “fitness standards” and how those are measured.

The gaps between job roles, job descriptions, and the work people actually do is pretty vast. I don’t mean the work that the procurement person who hires vendors does. I mean the work that people do across orgs.

Nothing was beautiful and everything hurt
Nothing was beautiful and everything hurt
Joyce Carol Oates was tearing into Elon Musk and we were all having a good laugh about that. Get his ass etc. The basic gist of it was something I've often said about politics-poisoned posting-addicts. People who have never not even once shared their enthusiasm for a band or a book they like or literally anything they might like at all if such a thing exists. The lamentations of their enemies does not count.

There are so many people like that. Even people on your side.

Can you imagine – I don't know whatever asshole you're thinking of right now – posting a picture of the ocean or a beautiful landscape that they took? A big game hunting safari also does not count. Or about a movie that they enjoyed? In aesthetic terms I mean not as part of the culture war.

One of the great pleasures in life is sharing something beautiful with others.
Sharing art isn't quite the same as creating it in the first place but it's akin to it in that you are making it exist for others who might not have known of it otherwise. You are also at the same time making yourself known. It's an act of kindness and generosity and vulnerability. Please look at a photograph of this rushing mountain stream I stumbled across on my hike. You can’t tell at first but if you look really closely I'm in there and so are you.

There was a “pro data center” party in DC last night and I truly can’t think of a dorkier way to spend a Saturday night. AI themed cocktails. You’re at a work party idiot.

You need to appease your abusive parents. You need to be friends with people who don't care whether you live or die. You need to listen to this song that's so popular no one has heard of it or else you're a snob. Why don't people read the news anymore?

That's the point--and, frankly, I think the more most students are exposed to what is truly unique about the academy, the more they love it. A university is one of the only places where people can play with ideas without needing to expect any sort of commercializability.

Anyway, it is Day 7 of the Be Specific Challenge, where I beg any reporter talking to these tech CEOs about how, exactly, AI is going to make us extinct in a year. If they dreamscape 50 hypotheticals, ask them to be specific, because they are doing a creative writing exercise for money, not policy.

Pause talk coming from the tech barons (which is not new, they've played this tune before) sounds to me like hedging for a shift in power after the midterms more than anything else. We should regulate them, but they should not be rehabilitated.

Both the action and the substance here are great. As a non-mathematician reading this helped me understand aspects of the AI companies’ treatment of math with more complexity. (Foolish me, I’d assumed the field might be treated with more respect than the arts have.)
Text reads: “In recent months, the success of AI in solving major mathematical problems has made headlines even outside mathematical circles. But solving problems is only a tool and proxy for achieving the primary goal of conceptual understanding and insight. Forgetting this in the world of AI may turn the tool against the primary goal. Indeed, the mass production at faster and faster pace of "true/false" statements could destroy fertile ground instead of breathing life into new ideas.”

My labor version of this is referring to people as “workers.” And anyone who says “THE workers” is usually trying to speak on behalf of a group of people who didn’t elect or even ask them to do so.

The fascist tycoons have priced these concerns into their adoption plans; they learned from the cycles with social media and the gig economy that they can weather public backlash over these things, and don’t mind being hated as long as they get entrenched.

Perfect encapsulation of what private equity does to everything it touches. Rampant wage theft and, based on my own experience at the park this year, total chaos at concessions. Machines were broken, they were out of basic items like ketchup, etc.

The only thing I'd add to @tressiemcphd.bsky.social's fine work this morning is that the establishment Dems have an ideological blind spot around organizing. They overindex on capital-intensive forms of mobilization and are completely lost when it comes to labor-intensive forms of mobilization.

Started using my airline points to do upgrades on short flights for work trips (say to Boston or Chicago) entirely because if I'm in first class I can get help when a flight is cancelled or delayed. That's the only reason. No luxury, just buying basic decency when something goes wrong.
