The NYT’s deliberate inclusion of filler (“um,” “like”) and pronunciation/dialect indicators* like gonna/wanna/doin’ etc when quoting white males vs everyone else is a quantifiable thing from which conclusions can be drawn * I know there’s a term for this—eye dialect?
