Okinawa's Shuri Castle reopens its main hall on November 23, seven years after the 2019 fire that destroyed six buildings. The cause was never determined. Police ruled out arson, and the fire department found the burn itself had destroyed the evidence.

In June, a 64-year-old school custodian in Shimane kissed a woman in her 20s without her consent. Four Japanese news outlets covered the same board of education announcement on the same day; only one of the four, though, put the actual word for the assault in its headline.

Kan'on, the second layer of Chinese readings used in Japanese, came back with the missions to Tang China between the Asuka and Heian periods. The same ships carried the ritsuryō legal codes and Chinese poetry.

It's rumored that only around six non-native speakers from outside the kanji-using world have passed Level 1 of Japan's Kanji Kentei. One is Bret Mayer, an American translator and kanji instructor in Hamamatsu who got hooked on Japanese via Dragon Ball.

Speaking with some knowledgeable people at PAX, Asian consumers don't like AI much either, but they are way less visceral about the response than Western consumers are. We are far more likely to publicly call it out and degrade it here. PAX barely had any, but TGS had tons

Japan has gone from a rice shortage to a rice glut. Private inventory hit a record 2.43 million tons in June, far above the 1.8 to 2 million tons considered normal. Two years ago, shops were rationing bags and the government was releasing emergency reserves.

Leave a medical bill unpaid in Japan and the hospital can report it to the government, which shares it with immigration. Since April 1, 2026, the reporting threshold has dropped from ¥200,000 (~$1.3K) to just ¥10,000 (~$63).

If a Japan travel agency plans your trip for "free", someone is still paying them. That's usually the hotel, at 5% to 15% of your room rate. Which means the agent only earns on properties they already have a business tie-up with.

Why does Japan cook most of its wild salmon? A Tokyo Metropolitan Institute of Public Health survey of 27 wild Japanese salmon found Anisakis (parasitic nematodes) in every single one. The fish averaged 22 worms each, with one fish containing 161.

At their peak around 1965, Kyoto City alone had roughly 500 sentō, the public bathhouses most people washed in. Today the prefectural cooperative lists only 100-some across all of Kyoto. The reason? Home bathrooms became standard, and water heating costs kept rising.

Mandarin is a tonal language, so advice like "just say it more gently" is hard to apply. As one X user pointed out, changing the pitch of a Mandarin syllable can change its meaning rather than simply making the speaker sound more polite.

Go-on, the oldest layer of Chinese readings in Japanese, arrived with Buddhist sutras from the sixth century on. Those chanted readings stuck: 行 is gyō in go-on, where the later kan'on layer reads it kō.

Japan's Kanji Kentei draws 1.29 million applicants a year, but only 1.37% sit its two hardest levels. Level 1 expects you to know a mind-boggling 6,000 kanji. Of the 2,535 people who sat it in FY2025, a mere 12.5%, or 316, passed.

The zainichi generation are fascinating, the Taiwanese ones especially often are still imperial apologists because the invasion there was simply a generation ahead of the rest of Asia and it's a weird contrast to the deep enmity every other nation has for imperial Japan's never apologized for crimes
