Another example, a group who taught me a lot about my city. Uncovering landforms and stories created by buried waterways has changed the way I look at my home and the interactions of humans and nature in it. Inspiring folks I'm proud to have joined at @lostriversto.bsky.social lostrivers.ca

I'll go first. Josephine Mandamin circumnavigated the Great Lakes on foot, in ceremony. She inspired a movement through her dedication to honour water through prayer and attention. I walked the Great Lakes Water Walk 2017 & was fortunate to hear her speak. She inspired everyone to act for water.
Me photographed from behind as I watch the sun come up over Lake Ontario and the Credit River. I'm wearing a poster strung on my back which reads "Protect our water" over my long skirt and shirt. The dawn ceremony at the mouth of the Credit River, volunteers in bright yellow t-shirts with the Great Lake Water Walk 2017 logo on the front all gathered under large weeping willow trees as we got ready to walk along the shore to meet the other walkers who were starting in Scarborough. Posters on fencing at the meeting spot at the end of the day's walking for water, where the east and west walking groups met (at the bottom of Dufferin Street on the waterfront). One poster has the GLWW 2017 logo, a beautiful yin/yang illustration of Josephine Mandamin and of water, the Great Lakes represented in a large water drop. The name of the walk in Anishnaabemowin is printed around the logo. Beside it, a poster from Christ Belcourt and Isaac Murdoch with a water being, text reads: Water is Life Protect the Sacred"

And thus, I don't want to focus on the name which will remain the same or change, all in good time. I'd rather focus on people who have done good work for water, who've made a difference because of their love, expertise, skill, inspiration about the Great Lakes. Who is someone who gives you hope?

So instead of shock, grief, anger at the latest insult to our national story about this Great Lake, I’m instead thinking about the grief felt by those who, in spite of our national attempts to erase and subsume them, continue to honour and protect water. To speak up for all lives, not just human.

And so for me, the name is a reminder of our relationship with the land & waters that sustain us. Which brings me back to the history of this city on the lake where I’ve lived for over 35 years. How the Mississaugas who lived on &cared for these waters were moved west, no other nations included...

I’m aware that the Mississaugas of the Credit reserve is far from their historic waterways bc our province kept moving them off of each new settlement. I’m aware of the Dish with One Spoon Covenant, the original land-sharing agreement among different Indigenous communities & cultures in the region.

I mean, love Lake Ontario. It’s home & a wonderful teacher. I love all the Great Lakes I’ve met (never been to Lake Michigan). But I’m aware of the history of my country, the settler-colonial nation-building that broke relationships, broke treaties, steals land from Indigenous people & vice versa…
A stone in the park next to Etobicoke Creek marking the spot as having historic importance to the resettlement of the Mississaugas and the creation of the city. The plaque reads:
"The Toronto Purchase
In August 1788, Alexander Aikin commenced the survey of the western boundary of the lands purchased from the Mississauga Indians near here, at the mouth of Etobicoke Creek.
Etobicoke Historical Board, 1988"

Does the name come from a relationship with the place? Did it develop out of shared values among various stakeholders, or a history of inhabitance the lead to deep knowledge about the place? Does the name relate to someone, something, some phenomena that makes this place meaningful to us?

I’m thinking about the shock, anger, disgust & grief being expressed today by so many people around the escalation of tensions leading to the weird renaming of this beloved neighbour of mine. It can veer into nationalism, & that never sits well. So instead, I ask: what does it mean to name a place?

In case anyone needs it for their syllabi, my statement in gen-Ai from the minicomic I made as a syllabus for class last semester. All online and printable here spinweaveandcut.com/fall-2025-sy...
a snippet of a mini-comic, at top - straight line stretches from point A to B. Immediately below, same dot at A, then becomes a curving, meandering line that winds through the page and ends at a point with rays and a question mark emanating from it. Text reads: "Nothing can do this for you - for that robs you of experience and conflates answers with learning. Rather, it's all the decisions you make along the way, the mistakes, struggles, and surprises! These pathways you create - this is learning.

Post from Amanda Gorman’s Instagram that says

For Renee Nicole Good
Killed by ICE. on January 7, 2026
by Amanda Gorman
They say she is no more, That there her absence roars, Blood-blown like a rose.
Iced wheels flinched & froze.
Now, bare riot of candles, Dark fury of flowers, Pure howling of hymns.
If for us she arose,
Somewhere, in the pitched deep of our grief, Crouches our power,
The howl where we begin,
Straining upon the edge of the crooked crater Of the worst of what we've been.
Change is only possible, & all the greater, When the labour
& bitter anger of our neighbors
Is moved by the love
* better angels of our nature.

What the Alberta government just did should worry all Canadians. When they legislated striking teachers back to work, they went a step further: They used the notwithstanding clause. This is part of a worrying trend. @emmettmacfarlane.com helped me break it down:

ICE admits that up to 50% of arrests in its Chicago raids are "collateral.” These aren't statistics. They are parents taken from their children, neighbors taken from our communities. When does a "collateral" U.S. citizen child's trauma matter? This isn't law enforcement; it's a campaign of terror.

Something odd about our education system is the way that children get less agency and independence the older they get, rather than more. Maybe this is linked to the apparent drop off in intrinsic motivation as young people get older as well? 🤷‍♀️

I drove my youngest to work yesterday morning, which meant I could go for a walk to explore Bickford Park and the surrounding area again. I was tracing the path of buried Garrison Creek, the waterway that once flowed under the Harbord Bridge before it was fouled by dumping, stuck in pipes, covered.
A marker on the sidewalk to indicate where Garrison Creek once flowed freely, and now is buried in a combined sewer flow under the ground. Bold green letters spell “GARRISON CREEK” over a shield with oak leaves and acorns in the centre, the name around them like a coin.A closer look at the circular shield with a red oak branch, reading Garrison Creek. The only visible remainder of the bridge that the creek once flowed under before it was buried in concrete and the ravine filled in behind my vantage point: the top of the wall on the north side. It’s covered in graffiti and doesn’t give away its historic significance.
