Happy Day 1, teachers! There are lots of changes and challenges this year, but think of every challenge as a new opportunity. At least that’s my mindset going into it all. Enjoy meeting students today and have a hope you have a great start to the year.

Grading attendance and participation seems incongruent with the Ontario government's stance on meritocracy, will fuel the flames of grade inflation, and will likely be subject to racial bias. "A" for Effort: Why Grading Attendance and Participation Might Actually Make Things Worse

“A” for Effort: Why Grading Attendance and Participation Might Actually Make Things Worse
Recently, the Ministry of Education announced a significant shift in how teachers will evaluate high school students: attendance and participation will soon be incorporated into final grades. Specifically, for Grades 9 and 10 students, 15% of their grade will be devoted to attendance and participation, with 10% for students in Grades 11 and 12. Education Minister Paul Calandra stated that this idea came exclusively from his engagement with teachers.

The mathematician John Venn was born on this day in 1834. To commemorate the occasion, here’s a poem in the form of a Venn diagram.
Poem title: At the Intersection

The poem is divided into two overlapping circles.

The left-hand circle is titled ‘me’ and the text reads:
the day we
went out to have
an ice-cream, we said nothing
just let our silence melt in
the air as we walked across the common
our love never tiring at all

The right-hand circle is titled ‘you’ and the text reads:
we should
have talked it over but
nothing ever seems to get
in your fat head. You are so
common that I wish we’d never met
at all and I’d married Tim instead

In the intersection of the poem (where the two circles overlap), the text reads:
we
have
nothing
in
common
at all
