Boulder Faculty Assembly passed a resolution calling for no extension of the OpenAI contract. Vote was 39-8-1 after suspending the bylaws. Everyone at CU Student Government public comment has been fired up about their corresponding resolution, talking about trust and societal impact. So energizing.

i have a theory that qualitative educational researchers LOVE to use overly precise statistics in reporting the demographics of their research sites because it feels more science-y. HOWEVER ... it also enables reverse look ups of research sites and should be avoided.

I research teachers' work. There is a known gap between public perception and the actual day-to-day experience of teaching that sociologist Dan Lortie poetically described as coming from "the apprenticeship of observation." This imagination/reality gap creates lots of problems in ed policy.

I don't disagree. But, as I wrote back to these reporters, I am most optimistic about projects that respond to the expressed concerns of students and teachers. These are the people who spend 180 days inside schools each year, and they're the key actors in the process of teaching and learning. 1/n

the postwar university for all its problems worked according to a pretty complex balance of cultural and economic capital with other kinds thrown in, but it looks like we can simplify our Bourdieu for the phase of neoliberal higher ed we’re in now, where the only thing that matters, ever, is money

A lot of universities will be facing big deficits and looking to cure what ails them. I just want them to be thoughtful about it.
Screenshot of article which reads: At the same time, new job-focused majors may not be sustainable — and can even backfire. Dominique Baker, an associate professor of education and public policy at the University of Delaware, pointed to the rise in computer-science degrees in the 2010s. At the time, they seemed like the best way to secure a high-paying salary after graduation, she said. But with the rise of generative artificial intelligence, computer-science jobs are increasingly hard to find, and enrollment in such programs is falling significantly.
“When you tie the viability, the financial viability in particular, of an institution really tightly to jobs creation on that scale,” especially as a four-year institution, she said, “you have to be really careful, because you can find that in 10 years that program that you poured all your money into — worthless.”

I came across this beautiful (and timely) Maxine Greene quote in Kathy Schultz and Rachel Throop's new book, PRACTICE: KEY WORDS IN TEACHER EDUCATION. "What is meant by teaching as possibility in dark and constraining times?..." Teaching is, in the end, a profession of hope. #EduSky
What is meant by teaching as possibility in dark and constraining times? It is a matter of awakening and empowering today's young people to name, to reflect, to imagine, and to act with more and more concrete responsibility in an increasingly multifarious world. At once, it is a matter of enabling them to remain in touch with dread and desire, with the smell of lilacs and the taste of a peach. The light may be uncertain and flickering; but teachers in their lives and works have the remarkable capacity to make it shine in all sorts of corners and, perhaps, to move newcomers to join with others and transform."

this is an accelerated version of what politicians have been doing to public schools for decades now: disinvest, create jacked metrics, declare the system broken to make way for education as an individual –– not a common –– good. an educated populace is a threat to authoritarianism.

the really cool part of tech companies using AI help tools is that we know we are basically on our own, so we can spend 30 minutes trying to solve a tech problem on our own before we insist on getting a human, who then proceeds to walk us through the FAQs like we didn't just spend 30 min on that. /s
