Today, the day of the 100th anniversary symposium for Jean-Pierre Serre in Paris, I'm thinking of this quote from another mathematician, A. Connes. I do think it's important we foster confidence in our own expertise - as a nonsense filter and departure point for creativity.

Hey @ericlipton.nytimes.com 👋 AI is not “evolving” on its own. *People* are choosing how to build it. *People* are choosing how to train it. *People* are choosing how to run it. Maybe the problem is that they are the *wrong people* to make these choices.

“Hurried Science” “Hurried science is when scientific research is sped up in such a way that reliability-enhancing norms get violated in the process.” New preprint by @dellsen.bsky.social philsci-archive.pitt.edu/30114/
Abstract
In times of crisis, science tends to move fast. However, speeding up science often involves deliberate compromises to the scientific norms that are meant to guarantee the reliability of scientific results in normal circumstances. Call this hurried science. Some of the compromises involved in hurried science can be kept track of and later revisited—say, by conducting a new study with larger sample sizes and proper randomization. However, I argue that hurried science may also involve untracked compromises to reliability-enhancing scientific norms, in which the negative epistemic effects of speeding up scientific research are not properly noticed or understood. I further argue that these are considerably more worrying for the overall reliability of scientific research, insofar as they are liable to lead both scientists and the general public to overestimate the trustworthiness of scientific results.

It depends what the kinetic bottleneck in research is, and I don't think it's reading papers (most of which in your field you know intimately anyway) or having ideas. The bottleneck is getting job/funding, having very good ideas (not the same as just ideas), and, crucially, doing the actual work.

It surely depends on the area of biology, and in any case I do think LLMs can be v. useful for bibliographic research. But things have surprising consequences - e.g. if bibliography is easier, you might read less etc. - and the loss of confidence is probably in itself a huge underappreciated factor.

Thinking of this, but in biology. At least for now, 'AI' in the sense of LLMs has been nothing as fruitful as BLAST, HMMs, or AF, not to mention cloning or CRISPR. If anything, I'd wager AI has brought about a decrease in interesting papers, as if people lost confidence or were waiting for somethng.
