It's October. That means that for the first time ever, a paper I wrote has been under review for more than 2 years.

All indicators are flawed. But for some we can wonder what they are even indicators of. Have I been read by AI? A new indicator of impact, relevance, or of abuse and appropriation? See www.amicitedby.ai 1/2

💡 How can we prevent disease as a result of climate change? At Maastricht University, the new Climate Health Institute is studying the health effects of heat, water and air pollution - with a focus on those most at risk. What should climate-health research prioritise? More info at bit.ly/4xLOcEx

Back of the envelope calculations: 3600 years of research time went into the collective application process. The research will fund 3200 years of research. We are 400 research years poorer as a result of this. 1/2

If you submit two papers simultaneously to the same journal, each citing yourself many times, you prompt the editor to screen your publication history. If that shows that you published 150+ papers in 2026 already and have 50+ accepted publications for 2027, do you actually think you'll get through?

This is in part - but not completely - a neutral citation problem. When we cite, we should disclose what we cite something for and what that citation means in our text. Most citations nowadays are 'neutral' in the sense of lacking these narrative indicators. 1/
