The modern research ecosystem of online tools and communities is controlled by for-profit companies. But we think that researchers should be the priority - not the product. So, we're announcing Aster ID: not-for-profit Atmosphere account hosting for researchers.

Vaclav Smil’s “Energy and Civilization” + “Grand Transitions” really drive home what an exceptional and strange time we have been born into. Also returning to histories of Industrial Revolution and 20th c, because this is *at least* an Industrial Revolution-scale thing.

Strange how many problems human language turned out to be able to solve before LLMs, when you think about it (and math is also a language)… One of the very few truly open-ended systems we have created.

It's funny that the most challenging distributed systems problems are not, like, consensus algorithms, but much less flashy things like versioning and upgrades

Adversarial interop and open source can emerge during the early stages of disruption for this reason. You don’t have time to lock down and extract every little thing when there’s a huge greenfield in front of you. Moving fast has higher upside, even if you cede vast tracts of territory.

Design, strategy, and software architecture all come from a strong point of view. They are values statements. It’s interesting that AI is currently bad at all three.
