It has finally happened. I have finally had a discussion at work that was so stupid, such a waste of time and money, and so patently ridiculous that it has legitimately made me want to either quit or burn down a building

The first Wednesday of October, our sister organisation: Queen City Urbanist Book Club is talking Escaping the Housing Trap by author of Strong Towns Charles Marohn Jr. Join us Wednesday October 7th from 7pm to 9pm at the Cathedral Community Centre if you'd like to join the discussion!
A poster for the Queen City Urbanist Book Club for their Wednesday October 7th meeting from 7pm to 9pm at the Cathedral Community Centre including a picture of the cover of the book Escaping the Housing Trap by Charles Marohn, Jr and a quote from the book: "When housing becomes a good investment for homeowners by reliably going up in value year after year, it impairs the ability of non-homeowners to purchase a home. When housing as a form of esteem or self-actualization leads home-owners to demand exclusionary zoning practices, it makes it difficult for needed housing to be built.”

Happy Michaelmas! When Satan was cast out of heaven on this day he landed in a bramble patch. The pain of the thorns led him to curse the fruit by... er... urinating on them. Eating blackberries after today can be deadly. Read more about it in A Feast of Folklore! #folklore

I learned today that Fat Bear Week was moved to this week from the first week of October because the US Government keeps having government shut downs when they have to renew the budget in October, interrupting the salary of the park rangers who put the event on. We truly are in the bad timeline.

Song for Autumn ~Mary Oliver #equinox #poetrysky
Song for Autumn

Don't you imagine the leaves dream now how comfortable it will be to touch
the earth instead of the
nothingness of the air and the endless freshets of wind? And don't you think the trees, especially those with
mossy hollows, are beginning to look for
the birds that will come — six, a dozen — to sleep inside their bodies? And don't you hear
the goldenrod whispering goodbye, the everlasting being crowned with the first
tuffets of snow? The pond
stiffens and the white field over which
the fox runs so quickly brings out its long blue shadows. The wind wags
its many tails. And in the evening the piled firewood shifts a little,
longing to be on its way.

Oulu (northern Finland) does indeed have real winters by Canadian standards. Compared to Montreal, Oulu’s January temps are similar but winter lasts longer on each end. Somewhat less snow but way less light. But a Canada/Minnesota winter is still very rare in Europe (unless you count Russia).
