During last budget, Clr Tsiklis insisted on the city hiring a couple internal auditors. There's a VERY brief summary of the auditors' findings across 12 internal audits & BIG SURPRISE they mostly found things are operating pretty well but need tweaking here & there. #yqrcc

The point of this exercise is for administration to get a chance to show council the size of challenge they're facing in getting the mill rate down to council's target. And, more importantly, it gives council a chance to go over the budget early and ask questions now #yqrcc

For background: What is going on right now at city hall is council is going through a series of five budget information sessions. The numbers they are looking at are VERY PRELIMINARY. Like I said, they were put together IN THE SPRING! #yqrcc

The garbage dude basically skipped the tail end of the graph — and the follow up graph — in which admin lists proposed service reductions and savings to bring that estimated mill rate increase down to city council's Strategic Imperative target of 5.81% — WHICH IS LESS THAN 7.01%!!!! #yqrcc

The 5 comparator cities that we're using for this year's budget discussion are: Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Edmonton, Calgary. I don't know that we're especially comparable to those cities so I don't know that comparing ourselves to them is at all useful. And yet, here we are. #yqrcc

And then… you go through all the trouble of finding & compiling this information and I'd still be left with the same question I've had for the last year: "Should we even be comparing ourselves to those 5 designated Comparator Cities???" #yqrcc

Man, I see this & I'm like, this is a HUGE ask. Like I wonder, where does each city store this info? How do they break it down? Where is the most recent version of this data? Is the most reliable version online? What the fuck does "organizational depth" even fucking mean??? #yqrcc

Yeah, all that time I've spent trawling through Regina's opendata portal (& I don't want to add up the hours) is labourious. But I think it was valuable & gave me a better appreciation for how all that data came together. & that makes me think about the city differently. #yqrcc

I guess what I'm getting at is I'm convinced that by "saving us time", AI is actually robbing us of the most important part of any creative project: Time. #yqrcc

What concerns me is that people using AI to do analysis won't have to do any of that thinking. As a consequence, they won't even become a little bit suspicious when AIs hallucinate & they'll be easy to snooker with bad information. #yqrcc

After one of these little personal "analysis" projects, I've come away having had to think hard about where my data comes from & what it means. I'm sure that AI can be built to more accurately pull good data out of the noise of the internet but… #yqrcc
