very tired of being told it is the responsibility of urban democratic voters never to risk possibly maybe by chance seeming less than respectful of rural red state life and then watching thousands in nebraska cheer on the president joking about a nuclear strike on me and millions of my neighbors

Sorry but the doom I feel with the AI race is somewhat similar to what I felt at the start of the pandemic. Many voices raising the alarm & urging action before it’s too late but they’re being labelled as alarmists while most people are oblivious & governments are too slow to pay attention & act.

The “jaw-dropping” El Niño currently heating up the planet has burst through the highest temperature ever recorded for the phenomenon, several months before its expected peak.
A line chart showing temperature anomalies in the Niño 3.4 region of the Pacific Ocean, compared to a 30-year rolling base period since 1982.

A gold line shows temperatures in 1997, a teal line in 2025, and a red line in 2026. The red line surpasses all others reaching 3.07ºC, and at an earlier point (September) than the previous El Niño that reached a comparable range in November 2015.

This "going rogue" framing is nonsense. These are still just text analysis models. It's openAI that is "going rogue" by giving a computer program complete autonomy to make decisions without human oversight. That's a danger whether it's a fancy new LLM or an old-fashioned SQL database.

When I say "bullshitting is inherent to LLMs," I don't mean it colloquially, I mean it empirically. Here's the bleeding edge of the frontier (Opus, Sol, Fable, Astra), and the lowest bullshit rate (answering wrongly instead of admitting ignorance) is 45%. artificialanalysis.ai/evaluations/...
AA-Omniscience Hallucination Rate vs. AA-Omniscience Index
AA-Omniscience Hallucination Rate (lower is better) measures how often the model answers incorrectly when it should have refused or admitted to not knowing the answer. It is defined as the proportion of incorrect answers out of all non-correct responses, i.e. incorrect / (incorrect + partial answers + not attempted) · AA-Omniscience IndexAA-Omniscience
Description: AA-Omniscience is a knowledge and hallucination benchmark that measures factual reliability, rewards precise knowledge, and penalizes incorrect guesses or hallucinations. It provides a detailed assessment of a model’s ability to distinguish known from unknowns across diverse knowledge domains.
Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2511.13029
Dataset: https://huggingface.co/datasets/ArtificialAnalysis/AA-Omniscience-Public
Implementation:
The benchmark consists of 6,000 questions covering 42 topics, including Business, Humanities and Social Sciences, Health, Law, Software Engineering, and Science, Engineering and Mathematics.
Models are scored using the AA-Omniscience Index, which assigns points for correct answers, subtracts points for hallucinated responses, and keeps abstentions neutral, rewarding abstentions over incorrect guesses
Each answer is graded as either CORRECT, INCORRECT, PARTIAL_ANSWER, or NOT_ATTEMPTED based on the model's response and the ground truth answer. GPT-5.6 Luna (medium) is used as the grading model
Intelligence Index Integration: AA-Omniscience contributes two components to the Intelligence Index: (1) Accuracy - the proportion of correct answers, weighted at 10% of the overall Index, and (2) Non-Hallucination Rate - calculated as 1 minus the hallucination rate, weighted at 5% of the overall Index (AA-Omniscience's 15% share).

worth tying this into the political economy of the slave south as well. from roughly the 1820s onwards, slavery became enormously lucrative in ways that had never been seen before. slave traders became millionaires. large planters had tremendous purchasing power. just huge amounts of wealth.

Wake up, babe. The Prime Minister just dropped “hydronym”.
The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.
