Our kids, 9 and 13, are radicalized against AI. This isn’t something we’ve made any conscious attempt to do and in fact we barely talk about it in the house. No idea if this is typical but my sense is that the AI vibes are really bad among the adolescence set.

I see a lot of this as men trying to outsource to technology the kind of lovingly nagging labor (think: "drink more water, honey" "don't forget to take your pills, honey" "I scheduled you a doctor's appointment, honey") that has traditionally fallen to wives.

For 12 years I've developed our Year 7 curriculum. The course is well sequenced, interesting and challenging. Yet, over the years, when teachers have come down to teach a Y7 class alongside me, it's immediately apparent how many aren't able to teach without slide decks and worksheets to deliver.

absent shared norms, facts, standards of evidence or methods of reasoning, “public debate” is just broadcasting talking points performing “public debate” in that context means tacitly agreeing that whatever’s being debated, however fundamental, is just a matter of opinion even if you win, you lose

It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

I was scared of the black aida at first but I actually find it easier for these projects, it's not as hard to work with as I thought it would be! I think the fact you don't use any black thread and it uses silhouettes (which I actually love as an effect) helps

I've had MANY conversations with students who see this in themselves and friends: "persistence is reduced because AI conditions people to expect immediate answers thereby denying them the experience of working through challenges on their own." Arguments re: how could be used ≠ how it is being used.
We posit that persistence is reduced because
AI conditions people to expect immediate answers, thereby denying them the experience
of working through challenges on their own. These results add to the growing literature
on cognitive offloading and AI-induced deskilling, and suggest the need for AI model
development to prioritize scaffolding long-term competence alongside immediate task
completion.

I also find it fucking hilarious that the AI stans are like "your kids will be left behind if they don't use it" as if it's harder to type a prompt into a text box to ask someone else to do your work than it is to read and understand a book or learn mathematics on your own. Foh.

This is exactly the problem with our overwhelmingly banking model derived educational system. You do work for "credit" not for "learning" and this is the result.

I definitely worry about the way it will start to seep into what students think and feel about their learning experience... It sets up a combative power dynamic which can only be detrimental to their learning (but clearly any company pushing AI doesn't actually care about learning)

What strikes me about these marketing examples is the way they portray such a negative and antagonistic picture of the student/teacher relationship that just fundamentally misunderstands and misrepresents what education is about. Teachers are partners in learning not the enemy! It's not war!

"The paperwork" can be silly at times but is often "vital work." If you hear "we won't cut the frontline staff though" be afraid. It means stuff like "an RN will now spend most of her shift trying to get a lightbulb replaced and a medical gas tap fixed so the bed is open."

Under financial capitalism, profit is the prime directive. But care is too labor-intensive to be profitable at the level of compensation needed for sustainability. And it can't be easily automated at the level of quality required for human needs.

So, historically, men have used the privilege afforded to them by patriarchy to push the "unprofitable" work of care onto women, making it easier for them to hoard the more profitable (and thus higher-status) work for themselves. And companies encouraged this, because it meant more profits for them.

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.
