I've just published my debut poetry collection for adults and I am giving it away for free online. Here's a poem from the book, below. I hawked it to some fancy magazines, but no luck. Very proud to self-publish it. Download the entire book here: archive.org/download/the... #BookSky #PoetryCommunity

If you take the time to explore Christian’s diagrams, (as his students would be doing), you will soon find they get you thinking and realising all sorts of novel relationships between concepts you have not connected before. A clear indicator of a great explanatory model.

The focus on memory is the focus on the product. Much better to focus on the act of learning, the process.

When I wrote Teaching Meaning, people commented on how well it captured teaching and learning. Yet, I didn't need to refer to storage or retrieval at all. Except, in this passage:
Through the ways we talk about knowledge, we create and
bring forth the idea of knowledge, to which our students will adapt.

It’s our responsibility to converse within our communities and
reflect on our criteria. The same is true of our students. They exist,
of course. We can all agree, for example, who they are, what they
look like, the form of their handwriting, and their school grades.
But through the ways we converse about students, we bring forth
who they are. If we discuss learning as storing and retrieving
information, then we bring forth students as storers and retriev-
ers. If we discuss learning as adapting and making meaning, then
we bring forth students as adaptive meaning makers.

I had a play at making a stock and flow model today, to represent a continuous fermenter. A stock within a stock.
A stock and flow model of a countinuous fermenter, with a population stock and flow model inside it.

When it comes to education, this is a better definition IMO: Learning is structural coupling. than: Learning is a change in the LTM. The latter might be more useful in efficiency views and measurement, but not in overall curriculum or educational views.

Another possible negative effect of grade retention: lower earnings later in life. A new study from Texas finds temporary gains in test scores, but also lower high school graduation rates and, by age 26, substantially lower earnings. With important caveats. wp.me/p2nWPo-6e3

John articulates a distinction that is often overlooked. Criticism of EdTech is necessary but insufficient for humanizing education. Many prominent tech-lashers who oppose automation also advocate for forms of standardization based on the same logic of efficiency & optimization underpinning tech.

I wanted to redesign my model for teaching condensation to my 11-year-olds. My physics-teacher colleague and I came up with this. We'll have to see how it works in the classroom (using a bottle of cold water to help). I'm not sure if the evaporating flow should be in a lighter colour, or omitted.
A stock and flow model of condensation on a bottle's surface, with the flows: condensing, colliding and staying as a gas, and evaporating.

One of the (many) things that irks me about our current PD ecosystem is that deeply researched & classroom tested approaches like Christian’s have to fight for airtime and recognition, while EduGurus get paid 5-figures for Temu TedTalks & big box curriculum companies suck up funding.

I believe this purposeful non-academic chat to be important. It's about building a web of recursive conversations, in which students find they have a place. It lies in tension with the "every second counts" and "Do Nows". Which are often just about storage and separation.

We need social media to be a functioning vehicle for educational discussion again. At the moment it is just the established voices that are heard by everyone. Nobody is proposing a consistent and coherent focus on the interactions that lead to learning apart from yourself Christian.

The Discourse™️: “Kids don’t read. They would rather watch brain rot than learn.” My student: “The philosophy we discussed today was so cool. The energy in class was so hype that it felt like a sporting event.” Teaching is so complicated, but the ingredients can be simple. Books. Ideas. Dialogue.

From my view, the necessity of variation in learning & perception isn’t an a priori assumption. It's an abstraction from the coherence of our lived experience. We use it all the time. For example, Joni Mitchell told us "You don't know what you've got till its gone".
