we fucking loved it, even when there was basically nothing on it, and let me tell you something else: we loved it because of human connection, human diversity, human creativity. WE DON'T NEED A SINGLE THING ANY OF THESE COMEMIERDAS HAVE MADE AND TRIED TO SELL US IN ORDER TO HAVE A GREAT INTERNET.

Just successfully hooked my 22yo son on the vorkosigan saga using my usual method - control of the audiobook choice while driving on a road trip.

I've been in Canada for 3 days now, and I would love to know the numbers on Canadian citizens who had been living in the US who have gone back in the last, I dunno, 5 years or so. Because just everything is better here, in a day to day way.

Lundy Bancroft once noted that when abusive men break things in anger, it's never their own possessions, but always their victim's. That tech and AI's policy of "move fast and break things" has never yet included white supremacy, patriarchy, misogyny or other toxic systems therefore feels telling.

I don't know if it's the childhood spent reading SF/F or what, but if an acronym looks even remotely word-like, I'll give it a pronunciation in my head. Then I'll wind up saying that out loud at some point. Results are mixed. ASMR should probably not be wordified.

Lol, I like this framing! 20yo me would be deeply disappointed in where I am, but she was planning for success in a completely imaginary world. Much smarter 49yo me is reasonably happy with my life.

For real!! Comedian Micky Overman says it like it is. Generally the only people even entertaining the thought of evil AGI are men. Women are too busy fixing the ACTUAL problems of AI, like idk, the way it automates, reproduces and exacerbates misogyny and makes all our lives worse...

ooh, I like this take - all the elements are present, so call it what it is: not liminal (which was never quite right, tbh), but gothic for a new generation of people who don’t remember why we built that shit in the first place, or what it was supposed to be *for*

I have only had one dog (so I am not used to canine back-up), and he was incredibly timid around strangers so it never occurred to me anyone would be intimidated until the dog poked his head around the corner at a sales guy at the door who slowly backed away. Greyhounds ARE quite large.
