TIL that it's 70 years since the first commercial hard drive shipped. It stored 3.75 Mb of data, and was two metres high. 70 years! Today there's > 200 zetabytes of stored data, nearly a billion billion times more. Has anyone found the Marie Kondo of data? www.computerhistory.org/storageengin...
Picture of a stack of 50 black disks and the equipment to read the data around it. Also this text: "In 1954 Reynold Johnson assembled a team at the IBM R&D Laboratory at 99 Notre Dame Ave., San Jose, California charged with developing fast mass storage systems to replace punched cards and magnetic tape in accounting and inventory control applications. Informed by Jacob Rabinow’s ideas at NBS, IBM developed and shipped the first commercial Hard Disk Drive (HDD), the Model 350 disk storage unit, to Zellerbach Paper, San Francisco in June 1956 as part of the IBM 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) system. i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

I was part of a lottery-funded, British Library-led project called Unlocking Our Sound Heritage which set up a bunch of hubs that should be digitising collections for institutions around the UK. I don’t own a player for those tapes but they do. Your nearest hub was at the Uni of Leicester.

I want to save their voices from the ravages of time and degradation of old tape. To return them to their heyday, half a century past. To resurrect their friends, for just a moment, in the immortality of song.

I want to hear it. I want us all to hear it. Nobody at the church today has heard this recording. I doubt anyone knew it existed, or knows it exists still, hidden at the back of the safe. I want to digitise it. Make copies. Play it at their final service. Give them it as a gift, as we say goodbye.

But here's the thing. I was in the church safe. It's over a hundred years old, and there's always something to be discovered. And at the back, behind the record books, were some tapes. A two-part recording of the choir, from back when they were at their best.

I'm going to tell you a story and then, at the end, I'm going to ask you if anyone happens to have the niche knowledge I need to help... The story begins, as so many of my stories do, in an ancient church in the middle of a city. But it's not now. And it's not hundreds of years ago. It's the 1960's

1. Recently I’ve received lots of emails from people I don’t know personally, asking for my feedback on their books or papers. They explain the connection between my work and theirs and ask me to take a look. The catch, of course, is that the emails are transparently, obviously, written by AI.
