It’s been long enough and I’m petty enough to share this publicly: I’ve applied for two tenure track jobs ever, and at the one that isn’t this one, I was told not to wear nail polish to the interview by a search committee member

I’m about as lucky as it gets compared to the trans women I knew in Texas. I have a PhD. My academic advisors and community were amazing. I had a support network out of state. I have parents who love me and never said a negative word about queer people. I don’t know what to do with that.

I left Texas and moved to Boston. I slept on a close friend’s floor for a few months. I had a PhD but no stable housing situation. It took me six months to find work. I did apps and interviews for really competitive jobs while sleeping on my friend’s floor and had to act like it was normal.

I defended a little over a year ago. That summer the state legislature passed a law requiring public institutions require people to go to the bathroom corresponding to their assigned sex at birth. There was no way to continue there without my daily life being a political issue.

When I transitioned I was a grad student at a public academic medical center in Texas. The Texas attorney general ran doctors at my endocrinologist’s office out of the state and subpoenaed trans peoples’ medical records. For years I was in fear of being kicked out of my PhD on these grounds

I think the median voter believes in Natural Prices, and these are about how much things costed at the most recent point in their mind where they felt relatively financially stable. They expect politicians and businesses to honour this and take steps to ensure things cost their Natural Price.
