An editor’s farewell to Bluegrass Politics:
When I joined the Herald-Leader more than four years ago, this newsletter didn’t exist. Now, there are thousands of you who turn open this email each week for the latest government and politics headlines. It has been a privilege to bring these updates to you every Wednesday.

Friday is my last day at the Herald-Leader. I leave the newsroom with nothing but deep admiration for my incredible colleagues and fond memories of the work we did together.

One of my favorite days with this team was in January 2023 when the entire Frankfort press corps staked out the Capitol to find out if Matt Bevin was running for a second term after years out of office. Secretary of State Michael Adams put out popcorn. Someone else dropped off pizza. I brought doughnuts. And then ... we waited for Bevin to make his decision known.

Of course, Bevin didn’t run — which he only made clear after giving a very campaign-like speech — but that’s not the reason the day sticks in my mind so clearly. What I remember is how many journalists were packed into the Capitol, either outside of the Secretary of State’s office or waiting in the rotunda. One reporter even brought a folding camp chair. I was there with my colleagues and competition alike and felt such a sense of camaraderie.

Statehouse press corps across America are not as robust as they were in years past. That’s true in Kentucky, too.

But on that Friday afternoon, local journalism felt so alive. I wish more days in Frankfort had that kind of buzz because the halls of power need a vibrant Fourth Estate to provide a watchful eye — every day, not just when there’s the potential for drama.

I will always believe in the importance of local news.

You still need to read John Cheves, who is tireless in his work holding elected leaders and government officials accountable. You still need to read Taylor Six, an incredibly talented criminal justice reporter who is always finding an interesting cases to cover. You still need to read Beth Musgrave, who can do it all, whether that’s grilling UK leaders over secretive travel or monitoring ICE’s impact in the commonwealth. And of course, there is nowhere better to get your Wildcats coverage than the Herald-Leader.

Thank you for sharing your stories with me. Thank you for giving me your trust.

Thank you for following along, and please, don’t let this be the last Bluegrass Politics you read.

Would I vote for AOC? Hell the f–– yes, and twice on Sundays. But she's still right to think aloud about all this.
It’s not just that a five-second video of her adjusting her hair in the Bronx this year drew more than 25 million views on X and a tsunami of sexualized replies (“that’s the most kind of, like, brazen and obvious forms of it,” she said). It’s how “female politicians are discussed, approached, covered” overall.

“What is very odd about our political culture is that for some reason when you raise it, people just freak out,” she said. “They get so defensive at the mere suggestion that gender could play a role.”

She made plain that this was a problem “independent of ideology.”

“I experience it tremendously — from the right and from the left,” she said.

The losses of the only two women ever to secure the Democratic presidential nomination, Hillary Clinton and Kamala Harris, loom large. “It may or may not be related, but I absolutely empathize with the heartbreak that people feel around that and, frankly, how those women were treated,” Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said.

Screenshot from IT CAN'T HAPPEN HERE by Sinclair Lewis, a novel set in a fictionalized version of the 1930s United States, it follows an American politician, Berzelius "Buzz" Windrip, who quickly rises to power to become the country's first outright dictator (in allusion to Adolf Hitler's rise to power in Nazi Germany)]

the duties of despotism along with his shoes and his fine new coat. He no longer went out racketing. His cabinet begged him not to clown in barrooms and lodge entertain-ments; it was not dignified, and it was dangerous to be too near to strangers.

So he played poker with his bodyguard, late at night, and at such times drank too much, and he cursed them and glared with bulging eyes whenever he lost, which, for all the good-will of his guards about letting him win, had to be often, because he pinched their salaries badly and locked up the spoons. He had become as unbouncing and unbuzz-ing a Buzz as might be, and he did not know it.

Democrats won’t become the “party of the working class” by finding the right message. Instead, Dems need to stop treating working-class voters as consumers to be marketed to, and start treating them as partners again. www.contrariannews.org/p/labor-day-...
When I first came to Washington, D.C. in 1975, organized labor was still a mass-membership pillar of the Democratic Party. But in the decades that followed, two developments changed that: union membership collapsed under escalating attacks from organized corporate interests, and federal campaigning was reorganized around a paid industry of pollsters, media consultants, and data vendors. Over time, the Democratic Party replaced its direct knowledge of and engagement with working class voters with a set of professional services that structurally cannot deliver that same knowledge or engagement.

Today, too many Democratic and media professionals talk about working people the same way that Coca-Cola executives would talk about regaining a prized market segment they’ve lost to Pepsi — which is not the way anyone in a democracy should be talking about its citizens, regardless of their demographic group. That most commentators ask how Democrats can “win back” the working class — not “represent” or “answer to” them — reveals this dynamic in action.

... so there are Navier-Stokes draft solutions out there, and also it seems like OpenAI is spying on mathematics work in GPT, copying approaches, and then throwing their massive compute resources at others' ideas to publish it first. Statement from Andrew Curran: cims.nyu.edu/~tristanb/st...
Today, Levent Alp¨oge and I have made public three results: finite-time blowup with smooth forcing for incompressible porous media, for Boussinesq, and for 3d incompressible Euler. We believe we also have blowup for hypo-dissipative Navier-Stokes. We are not releasing that paper today: unlike the above, the Lean verification has not yet finished. We do not yet have anything resembling a presentable writeup. I mention it because it is suggestive of a path to unforced Euler. The program this fits into was not started by us nor was it proposed by a Large Language Model. The credit for the basic idea of this program goes to Diego C´ordoba and Luis Mart´ınez-Zoroa, who for several years have been exploring the construction of forced blow ups. We took their work as a starting point, using Large Language Models to push their program to completion. Concretely, what Levent and I did was to take the C´ordoba and Mart´ınezZoroa program, which achieved blowup results with rough forcing, and, with a great deal of help from LLMs, push it to smooth forcing and to the incompressible Euler equations. The ideas making this line of attack possible are due to C´ordoba and Mart´ınez-Zoroa. Let me make plain what I have said to colleagues in private: in view of this body of work, I believe Luis Mart´ınez-Zoroa deserves a Fields Medal. My work with Levent has been a purely personal collaboration, free of any institutional agreements or official involvement by either of our employers. We used several LLMs throughout: Anthropic’s Claude, OpenAI’s Codex, especially with GPT-5.6 Sol and, more recently, Astra. The latter was only used for writeups and auditing our arguments. He replied the same day: “If you are willing to give any details it would be useful to avoid competing here and in general we are always thrilled when mathematician make progress with our models. Additionally if there is anything in terms of compute from OpenAI’s end we would be happy to provide it.” I asked to speak the following week. On Friday, September 4th, I was asked whether I could meet that day; I again said the following week. At 12:45 on Sunday, September 6th, I was asked whether I could meet “at any point today.” Sebastien Bubeck joined. The three of us spoke twice that afternoon. Levent was not on the calls. I was told that an internal OpenAI model had produced a proof of finite time blowup for the forced Navier-Stokes equations. When Levent asked by text forthe precise statement, the answer was: “Existence of forced blowup in R3 and T3,” with “the forcing function is smooth option c and d in Fefferman.” I was told the proof is about 100 pages. I have not seen it. I should say here why I interpreted their statement the way I did, the interpretation I will discuss below. The route to the Clay problem through a smooth force, options c and d in Fefferman’s statement of the problem, is the route Luis and Diego opened and the one Levent and I had quietly chosen to attack. Almost nobody else I know of was working on it. It is not the direction one arrives at in a few days by giving a model the problem statement. When I heard “forced,” it was a bright red flag. I was shown a prompt and told the internal research model had simply been given the problem statement. Levent had been told by Sebastien “very little human input” had been used. This turned out not to be true. Over the course of the call, as members of their team sent Sebastien corrections and details over their internal chat, it emerged that an entire team had been working on the problem, that this was one of a number of things that was tried, that work had started on the unforced problem, that the team first set the model on easier problems, including Euler, that even the prompt that had been shown to me had been written by prompting Codex, and that an insane amount of compute had been used. I asked when the first prompt had been sent by them. This question was not answered directly by OpenAI for some time. Eventually it was agreed that it had been sent in the past few days, after information about our work had reached OpenAI. I asked whether the model had been trained on, or had access to, our sessions in Codex, into which we had been putting all our drafts for the whole of this project. I was told the model did not look up user data. I asked again, about training, and I did not get an answer.

I've seen a lot of "saying AI is useless is hyperbolic" but the flipside hyperbole is denying that AI still has serious deficiencies. Bullshitting is inherent to the ways LLMs work. Whatever the form—erroneous facts, mangled data, fake cites, or the plagiarism here—it's impossible to fully mitigate.
