It seems like the police are assuming the far-right losers are 'looking for an excuse' to do more damage and so must be given maximum space. In fact, they are turning a big dial that says 'thuggery' on it and constantly looking over at the state for the slightest sign of consequences.

I think the problem is that hard right Tories who have moved to Reform think they are in an actual political party that should propose policies, rather than an authoritarian populist movement. Needed better onboarding.

I would love to ask a prominent BBC journalist to give me an example of an illegitimate concern. Is seems to me that it has become a question not of fact, logic, or ethics but of volume. If a big enough proportion of a village was anxious about Bigfoot or Chemtrails, BBC would cover it in a way...

This is, I think, a very good point. The effect is cumulative. That is why it was such a grotesque mistake for Labour to follow a policy of not rocking the boat after the disastrous Tory years. The boat very much needed to be rocked, and steered on to a clearly different course.

This comes as no surprise. The level of vitriol directed against Starmer is out of all proportion to anything he has or has not done. It's vibes politics, which Labour have been very poor at grasping.

Privatised water is such an obvious scam that it's achieved the impossible: getting 82% of Brits to agree on something. The only issue to score higher was the public’s desire for Tony Blair to stick to retirement.

I would argue that the primary reason for the attack on Iran was that Trump got such a buzz out of the Venezuela affair that he has been itching for more of the same. As insane and appalling as it is, this is a more plausible explanation than anything which assumes rational consideration.

It is hard to understand how Starmer has not realised this by now. On the night of the election, he should have thanked McSweeney and sent him on his way (until, maybe, his help was needed in 2029). Instead, making him central to the way the country was governed has been an unmitigated disaster.

Yes, 'real' Britain. The BBC is paralysed by the notion that somehow those on the Right represent the authentic voice of the people of Britain, despite poll numbers not reflecting this at all.

There is a big, big news story here which BBC News are studiously avoiding picking up. There are no 'contradictory narratives'. The US Govt is telling bare-faced lies, easily provable as lies, to the American people, who can see the truth with their own eyes. Surely this is something to explore?

Who Goes MAGA?
With apologies to Dorothy Thompson, whose 1941 essay in Harper’s, “Who Goes Nazi?” remains a worthwhile read on the cultural archetypes of who is drawn to fascism, and who would never go down such a path. It felt like it could use a modern updating, however. Update: Just after I finished writing this, it occurred to me that there was no chance I was the first to think of doing this, so I did a search and sure enough, the writer Talia Lavin had the same idea months ago.
