Google finally updated some of its satellite images of Gaza and my god, it's horrific. The entirety of Rafah has been demolished. The majority of Khan Younis is in ruins. Entire towns completely leveled and erased of the map.

Decided to write this as there was some debate about whether predatory capitalism prevented Russia from being led by a man who wouldn't be the 1st one in 550 years to invade, or whether Russia has agency, given all of its nukes and gas. For too many, it's a tricky question.

Screen shot of Mat Riches' poem called Riches.

Riches

It looked like the sort of wedge

that would choke a shire horse to death:

two grand in bundles of fifties,

their waists pinched by red rubber bands.

You asked me to count the lot,

then drove away to meet a man

who knew a man, and came back late

in a lime-green Ford Cortina.

I thought we were made of money
when you let me sit in your lap

and we reverse-parked it, my feet

pressing on your feet in the dark.

Taken from my pamphlet called Collecting The Data. I'd love you to buy a copy from me or via Red Squirrel Press. If you get it from me it will be signed (if you want it to be).

SMALL BOAT WANTED! This is the historic #RiverTrent ford at Littleborough. I'm walking from York to Battle in Oct, largely by Roman Roads. I need to cross on Sat 3rd, & would much prefer a 'ferry' rather than walking around via G'borough. Can you help? See Alt for more. Thank you ❤️ #Hastings960
A Google Earth image from 2003, showing a large river winding through agricultural countryside, from bottom to top of the image. A road runs diagonally from the top left to mid right, broken by the river. A few buildings stand by it on the left bank, on part of the site of Roman Segelocum.

I'll reach this point in Saturday 3rd August, probably mid morning. It really would be great to cross by boat. I did the same York to Battle walk in 2016 and at this point had to walk around via Gainsborough, which was fine, but meant I missed one of the significant historic experiences on the route. The ford here was genuinely ancient, scene of many important crossing, a multitude of sundry ones, and reputedly at least one mass baptism.

I'd appreciate any help with this very much indeed. Please give me a shout if you can help, or know someone who can. Thank you.

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com. Inspired by recent news about the SpudCell. NS subscribers can read about it here: www.newscientist.com/article/2532...
Title: The artificial cell's diary

Panel 1: An oval green cell with a face opens its eyes.
Caption: Woke up to the scientists discussing whether I was alive or just exhibiting some of the symptoms.

Panel 2: The cell looks thoughtful
Caption: A bit heavy for first thing in the morning.

Panel 3: The cell eats some little dots in the liquid around it.
Caption: Had a swim, then ate some of the molecule soup that I live in. My day is pretty much all soup-based.

Panels 4: The cell looks uncomfortable
Caption: Then I began to feel rather odd.

Panel 5 and 6: the cell hseems to be splitting in two
Caption: But, I saved the big news for last:

Panel 7: The cell smiles. A new, smaller cell smiles back.
Caption: I made a new friend!

My Guardian comic from yesterday #odyssey
[Scene is at sea - we see Odysseus’s ship sailing past an island]

NARRATOR:
And next on his Odyssey

Sir Christopher Nolan led his followers

[We see that instead of Odysseus it is CHRIS NOLAN captaining the ship]

Past the Island of X

Inhabited by People Who Criticise Films From Just Watching The Trailer

[Show a load of guys on the rocks of the island, all tapping away on their phones]

They were led by their King,

the Musk.

The Musk stayed up all night in his cave

[Show a giant Elon Musk hunched over his computer at night in a cave, tapping away]

Posting comments about how he thinks Lupita Nyong’o is the wrong colour to be Helen of Troy, who wasn’t real

But Sir Christopher was immune to the song of the people of X

because he famously didn’t have a smartphone.

NOLAN [at the front of his ship, bellowing into the storm and waving his Nokia brick phone]:

I DON’T EVEN HAVE EMAAAAIL

[Narrator again]:

And he turned to his followers

NOLAN [turning to all the guys on his ship, all Nolanbro types, looking at their phones]

MEN!

Put down your mobile telephones! Do not listen to the sirens of X!

[Intense, Nolan-style close up on Nolan’s big, serious face]

NOLAN:
Some people will not like my big serious film…

But some people will like it...

and that’s fine.

[Ship sailing into the distance]:

MEN:
Hurrah!

[Ends]

Even in government, Starmer’s intellectual focus was on electoral strategy rather than policy substance. This was a kind of witless giddiness to the whole endeavour, a lack of ballast, like a balloon floating into the air. It was painfully obvious that conversations in Downing Street concerned how something would play electorally, rather than what they would do for the country.

Take the reforms to indefinite leave to remain. These plans make it almost impossible to integrate immigrants into the community. They exclude people who are here legally, in many cases for well over a decade.

Ignore the moral element. Who does that actually help? What problem does it solve? Which issue is it supposed to address? None. But then that was not the function. The function was to appeal to Reform voters. Decades from now, someone will be suffering as a result of these changes and no-one will really remember why they were even introduced or what the purpose was.
