Gallowsclough Cob bowl barrow (or what is left of it), #Cheshire. Though right next to G'clough Lane, it isn't easy to photograph without permission to access. Excavations in 1960 found a cremation and secondary remains. It is a peaceful final resting place. 📷 my own #TombTuesday ##Archaeology

#Chester was a booming port for Irish Sea trade in the tenth century. Pictured a hoard deposited c. AD970 near Chester Castle. In 1950 workmen discovered the pot with c. 500 silver pennies; silver ingots and pieces of chopped up jewellery, reflecting Viking Age trade networks #medievalsky #vikings

The Roman road from #York heading for #Tadcaster (RR 28c) ploughing through the fields south of Copmanthorpe as the A64 bows away west and back. The name 'Street Houses' in the distance hint at the route's ancient origins. I'll be tramping by on my #Hastings960 walk, on 1 Oct. #RomanRoadsFriday

Two successive Roman forts were built on this site in #Doncaster, commanding a crossing of the #RiverDon. At least the later one was known as 'Danum' & part of its NE wall is above ground (yellow line on the aerial). I'll pass here on my #Hastings960 walk, soon #RomanFortThursday #RomanBritain

Exposed stone foundations on a ridge overlooking the sea. It is a bright, sunny day, and the dominant colours are shades of blue, green and yellow. The stones are large and roughly worked into various cuboid shapes, laid into two adjoining rectangles, one larger than the other. A modern shipping beacon stands to the left, all angular metal.

Pottergate Tower, #Alnwick, viewed from the east - inside the line of the old town defences. Rebuilt in the 18th century, in a rather fancier style than its predecessor: it even had a spire, but that didn't last long. The other three sides are rather plainer. 📷 My own #TowerTuesday #Northumberland

It has various embellishments, including an open parapet, blind tracery panels, decorated buttresses, two coats of arms and a circular panel that once housed a clock. There is a large window high in the centre, through which signs of a modern holiday flat are visible. It really is available to let.

Today in 1940, an unnamed German airman takes a photograph as he flies over London. His image captures a Heinkel bomber in flight over the British capital. I've always found it a fascinating image, and often find details in it that I'd not noticed before. 🧵

The remains of the Mansio at Wall, just off Watling Street / the A5. The rectangular structure on the near side was a colonnaded entrance feature. This was just a few weeks ago, when the landscape matched the building's Mediterranean origins. 📷 My own #RomanSiteSaturay #RomanBritain

Part of a hyena jaw, complete with gnashers. Found in 1821 in a cave in Kirkdale, #NorthYorkshire, w. other fossils. William #Buckland examined them & found it stiff w. rhinos, hippos & elephants, dragged in by hyenas - not washed in by biblical flood. 📷 My own; item in #WhitbyMuseum #FindsFriday

I see some eyebrows are raised at the emergency alert. I'm near Stourbridge this evening, and the general chat in the pub is that it's good that HMG is 'finally taking this seriously'. Someone at the next table has family on alert to evacuate their house. Fingers crossed for rain.

The evacuations brought about by the wildfires burning out swathes of Europe, have now extended to medieval monarchs, as the Spanish authorities recover the remains of three Kings of Aragon and other artefacts, from a monastery threatened by the flames.

Good grief. 'Buckberry counted more than 160 separate fractures on the 165-centimeter-tall remains, including a skull smashed in 61 places, a deep, zigzag break to a shoulder, and nearly 60 strange, zigzagging breaks to the ribs.'
