When you get into an argument with Toronto reddit mods about a story where the accused, the victim, the courtroom, the associated business, and the fraudulently purchased mansion are all in the GTA but it gets taken down for not being Toronto relevant.

On Boston marriage, 1894
BOSTON MARRIAGE

What the Scarcity of Men in Massachusetts Has Brought About

The funniest of all social developments is that which goes under the head of Boston marriages. Two women, as well known as Susan Channing and Edna D. Cheney, have made separate appeals for this new departure of female habit, and have defended it with considerable success.

A Boston marriage is described to be a sympathetic union of two women, who have not been able to make good and agreeable matches with members of the opposite sex. Miss Cheney is of the opinion that in our present state of civilization they seem to be necessary and should not be interfered with. Miss

--The Evening Herald, 21 Feb 1894Channing also believes that since in our present state of civilization marriage like wealth is getting to be more and more the privilege of the few, the women unsought in wedlock or unable to get the men of their choice should have the right to form sympathetic unions with each other.

What is to hinder a Boston couple from adopting a child or even more than one? Why not grow a household in this manner? The meanest thing about old-maid life is that it takes to cats, or parrots, or poodles -- generally cats. I see no reason why a cat shall not have a share of sympathy but it has no claim upon a love it cannot appreciate. Besides, cat-love is a dreadfulapology for baby-love. By all means let our Bostonese adopt children. In this way, while there is no increase of children, there will be a decrease of homeless children.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

The pain of being an elder Millennial. I learned to type on a typewriter. I know I don't need 2 spaces after every sentence. I don't want to put 2 spaces after every sentence. But it's muscle memory. So now instead of 1 space or 2 spaces, I type 2 spaces and a backspace after every sentence.

So here's a weird one. This year Manitoba will stop using Daylight Savings. But Ontario (including northwestern Ontario which has traditionally followed Central time) didn't. So on November 1, northwestern Ontario will turn its clocks back and be on the same time zone as AB/SK, but not Manitoba.

I've seen everyone sharing that US Dialect Quiz so I decided to make my own, much crappier, CANADIAN DIALECT QUIZ to guess where in Canada you're from
A flow chart I have created with multiple questions and the answers determine where you're from.

Question 1 is do you call it a hydro bill (which then branches down to ON, QC, BC, MB) or an electric bill (which then branches down to SK, AB, NS, NB, PEI, NL)

Question 2 is do you call it a cabin (BC, MB, AB, SK) cottage (ON and atlantic) camp (northern Ontario) chalet (QC) or bungalow (Cape Breton)

To delineate BC from MB: do you call it dinner or supper

To delineate southern Ontario rural or big city: have you heard of a stag & doe

To delineate SK from AB: do you call a hoodie a bunnyhug

And finally to delineate NL from the other atlantic provinces: whaddayat? (Correct answer: dis is it b'y)

I get annoyed by the sheer scale of the mismatch. 2025 had the lowest number of homicides in Toronto in 40 years (during which our population increased by a third), and 2026 is on pace to be 20% lower than last year. Just an enormous unprecedented drop, and people are trying to drum up fear.

people are arguing, not unfairly, that Dolly was not "neutral" in the culture wars by citing the things she did, which is fair but: there is absolutely, no doubt, a reason 95% of the good things Dolly did, she did quietly under the table to draw as little attention as possible and it wasn't humility

This should be setting off major alarms. The US wanted restrictions on sovereignty, languages, and culture as part of a trade deal with Canada.
Screenshot of text reads: U.S. tried to restrict Canada's ability to get new trade deals
Benjamin Lopez Steven
In the final hours of negotiations, the U.S. tried to include restrictions on Canada's ability to strike trade deals with other countries, Carney said.

"Unacceptable," the prime minister said flatly.

Plus, the U.S. tried to restrict Canada's protections of its languages, its culture and its sovereignty, Carney added. He did not provide details of what those restrictions looked like.
