Every single one of the astronauts who went to the moon and back on Artemis II was educated at a public school. Thinking of the teachers who poured into Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen tonight. You helped send a kid to the moon! 🌕 💛

A bit of a different take on the amazing Artemis II launch footage. Here I stitched clips from the four Solar Array Wing Cameras to make this panoramic video. This is during the later part of the Core Stage burn until MECO and stage separation, sped up to 10x. 🔭🧪 #Artemis

Charon and the Moon look similar for similar reasons! Ancient surfaces (pockmarked and gray) that show geologic evidence for a semi-global volcanism event that happened after the heaviest part of impact history, and filled lowland areas with smooth plains -- liquid rock for the Moon, water on Charon

It’s easy to just focus on the things on the spacecraft that have given us trouble, but there are a lot of things for us to be happy about, based on these early results. Deeper dives into the data could always reveal issues, but here are a few things that have been good to see…

The Vegreville Pysanka, or Ukrainian Easter Egg, isn't just a very famous roadside attraction, it is a true marvel. It influenced the design of the Space Shuttle. It was a notable first in computer modelling. Oh, and it is also a weather vane! This is its story. 🧵 1/8
Man standing outdoors beside a large decorative egg sculpture mounted on a pedestal. The egg is covered in a geometric pattern of triangles and star shapes in black, white, and shades of yellow and gold. The man wears sunglasses and a grey T-shirt, looking up toward the sculpture. In the background are trees, parked vehicles, a small building, and a flagpole under a lightly clouded sky.

Like everyone else, I am in awe of Reis Wiseman's image of Earth. Personally, what I love most is it highlights the critical forces at play that protect us so much. The thinness of the atmosphere on the left, the aurora at the poles.... our fragile atmosphere and magnetic field. Without them....

TESS confirms what we saw with Kepler and K2 - on average, ***every single small red star has a planet around it***! And a short-period one at that (<30 days). And you know what the galaxy is mostly made of? Small red stars. PLANETS. PLANETS EVERYWHERE!!! Happy weekend pondering that, everyone.

I see "influential songs" is trending, so I have to give a shout out to one of the most popular samples of all time, because it's from my favorite piece of music of all time, Stravinsky's Firebird Suite. Specifically the opening shock chord from The Infernal Dance. laughingsquid.com/the-orchestr...

As someone who grew up in the age of saving money to buy a record, spending hours re-reading liner notes, marveling at album art... This is fantastic. It also spits in the face of artist abusers like Spotify. Long live the album. And I'm hoping the kids also learn the joys of live local music.

The first photo I captured of the 9-23-23 Ada, OK supercell (after a few test shots). Yes, all three lightning strikes were captured in a single image! From my distant vantage point, this intricately-structured supercell gracefully danced under a sky full of stars with unmatched beauty. #Photography
Photograph of a dramatic pancake-stack layered supercell thunderstorm with multiple bright lightning bolts striking the surface around the impressive towering updraft looming over a rural landscape. In contrast to the illuminated cloud structure, a deep blue starry night sky is visible on the left.

The main components of treating Bluesky as Tumblr: 1) reblog everything good as soon as I read it no I will not pace my reblogs you’re getting everything *when* I read it ALL AT ONCE 2) a funny shitpost is worth reblogging no matter what it’s about 3) art is good. More art. And nature photos.
