The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Highly recommend this new essay. Come for the 29,000 index cards, stay for the introduction of Unicode & implementation of IIIF. One of my fav quotes: "A good research infrastructure should encourage and inspire research, and ours quickly did just that, accelerating the expansion of the data."

If you work on the 19th-c press and are looking at bills for travel, repro fees, etc., applying for a Curran Fellowship should be a no-brainer. Not a lot of hoops to jump through, and the folks making the decisions are researchers just like you. These are open to anybody, of any age, anywhere. #C19

I feel like digital humanities was this great 15 year moment of techno-optimism that created solid resources and showed how old media connected to new media. Whereas AI is going to introduce a period of techno-cannibalism designed to devour digital humanities labor and anyone else in its proximity.

Honestly this is one of the most radical proposals I've ever seen (having been told stuff like this at anoother UoB is impossible) - it is INCREDIBLE for equality and access.
