An illustration I did for The Small Hand by Susan Hill. This story was published together with The Woman in Black in a nice hardback edition in 2024 by Vintage Classics. Signed giclee print £75 free UK P&P Email: nicktankardart@gmail.com for worldwide shipping costs and enquiries. Thank you.
An illustration of a narrow country lane surrounded by hedges and a small patch of woodland. Through the spindly bare winter trees a shape of a large house in silhouette against a stormy looking sky, great big clouds and a flock of jackdaw. A lone figure stands on the lane in the foreground, it stares at the house. Spooky and atmospheric. Black crosshatched pen and rolled block printing ink applied with a rubber roller.

Midsummer-ish in Applecross... Took this at midnight last night. Thanks to the neighbours for keeping the hall light on for added atmosphere 👍

Nighthouse… something I’ve been faffing with for a while now. A fictionalised view from Coille Ghillie in Applecross (there’s no castle or lighthouse, never mind one like this). It’s a bit clunky and I’m not sure where to go with it from here (maybe a picture book).

‘Paris Rooftops’ by my partner Clare. One of my favourites. Signed giclee prints available: £94.00 plus P&P 10% discount code: CLARESARTPRINT10 (apply on checkout). Etsy Link: www.etsy.com/uk/listing/7...
A stylised painting of rooftops in Paris. A jumble of rooftops from the foreground continues to the far distance where the white domed Sacre Coeur church rises above. Clare’s energetic use of black line drawing, watercolour and colour pencils depict an almost abstract version of this huge city. Dashes of red marks suggest the hundreds of chimney pots, the scene in bathed in a hazy pink and yellow watercolour wash suggesting the city near the end of a long hot summers day. Patches of pale green and yellow ochre contrast with the hazy pinks and bright red chimney pots. Beautiful.

Hello from this spooky little scamp! I am currently in the middle of moving house. No studio / brain power (on top of ongoing boring burn out. BORING) so not drawing anything I’m inclined to post. But I actually had fun doing this so I might do a few more of these photo collagey type things.

Into the mouth of the beast… faffing around with a slightly daft version of Dracula’s castle based increasingly roughly on that portrait of Vlad the Impaler. I did a black and white version too which I (obviously) almost prefer…

There’s a massive spectral wolf waiting to greet him and a mysterious ring of white fire burning next to the path. Lady of the Hermitage. Bit cheesy but I had the urge to draw a spooky Georgian, inspired by Hermitage House in Edinburgh, which was built around 1780.

I left my old job a couple of years ago. I’m getting by (just) but crikey, having done my tax return & seen how little I’m earning it was a shocker, it’s getting more & more difficult to earn money from illustration. I have been out of action too so…I’ll get cracking! Buy my art (FEBRUARY) 🙏🏻
A black pen in a crosshatch technique and black block printing ink applied with a roller on white paper illustration. The dark silhouetted shape of a woman in a black funeral dress stands at the foot of a bed in an Edwardian style room, she stares at a tired looking man under a heavy quilt. Moonlight shines into the room from behind the woman. Creepy and atmospheric.

Went to do some drawing, got distracted by 1965 Man Alive film on YouTube about 4 women sharing a flat. So I drew that. ‘Girls’ playing at real life before settling down and marrying. Indulging in the mild tedium of independence before the real drudge begins seems to be the message.
A sketchbook spread showing pencil drawings of faces and impressions taken from a 1965 documentary about 4 young women sharing a flat in South Kensington. Bouffanted hair dos are prevalent.

Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black, revisited. Faffing about with portfolio work.
An illustration in the style of a sepia photograph. Between two stone gateposts is a desolate graveyard. There is sea, and beyond it, land but the landscape is very flat. A tall woman dressed in late Victorian mourning is stood amongst the graves, looking spooky and mardy.

Signal Man. A cheery new drawing for January.
A black and white illustration that looks a bit like a photograph. A fuzzy image of a man wearing black clothes and a hooded top is in front of a railway cutting. There's a lot of scrubby grass and gravel, and the tracks can be seen behind the figure. There are a few brick built houses on the top of the embankment, and on the ground is a sign at an angle - the words on it read 'IN EMERCENGY CALL SIGNALMAN'.

Goodnight
A slightly weird view of a suburban street in Edinburgh at night. There’s a row of Edwardian terraced house seen in perspective almost from the end, a few trees and a distant view of dark rooftops and spires. There are bright streetlights and streaky pale clouds in the dark blue sky which is also lit up with laser beams from a light show a few miles away in the city centre.

A black and white illustration - a gothic stone mullioned window with a view of treetops and two large bats. On the right there is a painting of a sinister woman with an unpleasant smile on her face. A black and white illustration: A beach at sunset. A silhouetted man in the foreground is about to walk past us. He is wearing a flat cap, a jacket and plus fours. In the background there is a figure of what might be a person but also might be a vengeful wraith. Who knows.

Spooky Advent day 23: The Dead Room. An aging actor's murky past begins to eerily resurface in the radio studio where he's recording an episode of his long-running horror series. Written by Mark Gatiss in 2018, it was the first (and so far only) 'purpose written' GSFC since 1978's the Ice House.
A black and white illustration: The actor Simon Callow is in the foreground looking worried / a bit gormless (my fault not his). Brhind him can be seen the figure of a young man (Joshua Oakes-Rogers) with longish blonde hair, staring intently at Callow. There are bright studio lights above and the letters s-s-s are superimposed on the image
