All fiction titles from the English Catalogue, Volume 4 have now been added! That means 1862–1889 are complete. Next up: the 1890s... • 27,471 title entries • 6,770 author entries (most with bios) Big thank you to my students from last semester who assisted me to this milestone.
A graph of the number of titles published per year, 1837 to 1901, showing an increasingly steep increase up to the 1890s

My book, Fiction on the Page in Nineteenth-Century Magazines, is out now with Oxford University Press! academic.oup.com/book/58989 It’s a book about page fillers, product placement, and strange hybrid fiction. It asks how the page of the magazine became a spur for new, odd genres.

Important lessons from old books: "Victorian novels chronicle the terrible grief of losing children. Depicting the cruelty of diseases largely unfamiliar today, they also warn against being lulled into thinking that child deaths can never be inevitable again." theconversation.com/infectious-d...

Infectious diseases killed Victorian children at alarming rates — their novels highlight the fragility of public health today
Between 40% and 50% of children didn’t live past 5 in the US during the 19th century. Popular authors like Charles Dickens documented the common but no less gutting grief of losing a child.

In the 1840s, Albert Smith and Angus B Reach teamed with David Bogue to create a small craze for pocket-sized illustrated comic booklets. An old friend, knowing how much I like them, just gave me some that were bound together. Starting with Reach's "A Natural History of Bores," cuts by HG Hine.

It lasted less than a year. Digitised by the BL & free to view www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/titles/eveni...
Masthead is the Evening Star. The newspaper’s title appears in basic block capitals. The numeration tells us this is issue one, published on Monday 25th July 1842, and it lists the price at two pence.

I'm running a workshop for the Victoria Genealogical Society, on strategies for getting from data to story. We'll talk about researching history and about finding the plot. December 7, 10am-noon Pacific time. Registration fee ~$20. Register here: www.victoriags.org/content.aspx...
poster advert for workshop: Filling the silences in family stories: how to move from data to narrative. Most of us know our ancestors only through fading bits of paper: sepia photographs or family recipes, public records, the occasional packet of letters. What does it take to build coherent stories out of such tantalizing fragments of lives? This workshop explores research and writing strategies for constructing family memoirs, drawing on examples from a project set in Miami in the 1920s. Dec 7, 10am-noon Pacific time. Today's #MastheadMonday features the Railway Bell (1844-1846), one of a number of short-lived newspapers launched at the height of the 'Railway Mania' of the mid-1840s. This was digitised by the British Library and is free to view on the BNA: www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/titles/railw...
The masthead for the Railway Bell: Illustrated Advertiser newspaper. It features a large bell with a clock on it and a British flag surrounded by cherubs. It also includes a train, a hot air balloon, an imagined idea of an airplane and a steam ship, and a crowd of people watching all of it. Underneath the masthead it has the issue number 15 in Roman numerals, the date: week ending Saturday, 31st August, and the price: sixpence.
